Clay Problem

I've been inspired by this forum and now I'd like to get a buffer to use on my car, something similar to the Porter Cable 7424. The problem is that I live in an apartment complex and my car lives in a parking lot with no electric supply. Is there such a thing as a good quality rechargable buffer? I usually just do a small section of the car at a time so the charge wouldn't have to last long. Job quality would be more important than price.

I live in an apt complex too. Do what you have to do:

- be friends with neighbors, ask if you can run an extension cord from their place to your carport/parking spot.

- an alternative is to go to a friend's house and do it there.

I just can imagine a rechargeable buffer lasting long, nor will the price be inexpensive.

Ok..this maybe stretching...If you have a UPS , if you charge it, depending on model you could bring that out with you and use it.

I have a UPS that holds a charge for about an hour but again it depends..

Here is an idea. Not sure if it would work. How about one of those power inverters AC to DC. You could run it off of the 12 volt power source in your car to power the PC. Just an idea.

When I started looking for a buffer, a cordless semed the way to go. Power is not a problem so I too ended up with a PC. While searching I found this, and it was the only one I could find:

This is their return policy:

"Returned products that are not in salable condition will be charged a restocking/handling fee. Credit will be issued for the product only. Shipping charges that you incurred will not be refunded unless the return is due to our error and only if a replacement item is ordered."

You might be able to work something out if you don't like it.

Thanks Likecars, that's exactly what I was looking for! I put in my order for the Pro Shine Rechargable Buffer, I expect I'll probably receive it sometime next week. I'll let you know how it works out.

how about an electrical battery camping thingy that you can plug stuff into, like the PC. Don't know much about them though :)

Tiger, I'm sort of in your shoes as well. I'm looking forward to your review.

Well, I recieved my new rechargable buffer from Auto Barn today. Delivery time was about one week with normal shipping, no problem.

So, here's what's in the box:

7" orbital buffer

2 rechargable batteries

1 charging stand with cord

cigarette lighter power cord

instructions

6" applicator bonnet (?)

6" fur polishing bonnet (?)

7" terry bonnet

Yes, 2 of the bonnets are too small to fit on the buffer! There's a note saying they are throwing in a free terry bonnet, it's the only one that fits. Oh well...

There are a few things that have me a little concerned. For one I don't see any way to remove the buffing wheel. Let's hope it never wears out or gets damaged. Also, there's no speed selector. I guess one speed fits all.

Anyway, what really matters is how well it works. I'm going to have to wait until the weather warms up a little before I can try it out. I live in California so hopefully that won't be too long.

Oops, my mistake, the bonnets do fit. It sounds like the elastic is starting to tear, but they will go on.

Here's a picture of what you get.

Technical Info:

It says on the box that it runs at 2400 Orbits Per Minute.

The 12 volt NiCd batteries are supposed to last for 25-30 minutes each. The instructions say the batteries take 5-10 hours to charge and will take 500 charges.

It runs on 12 volts, there is an adapter to run it from the cigarette lighter. It has a 17 foot cord.

There is no cord for a 120 volt outlet, though it would probably be easy to improvise with a 12 volt transformer from Radio Shack.

My car is a new Jaguar with a very high tech electrical system. I'm hesitant to run it from the cigarette lighter and I don't have a nearby electrical outlet, so I plan on using it exclusively on batteries.

My car is metallic black. It has some light swirls and has already acquired a few small scratches. I'm hoping the buffer will help. I'll let you know how it works out.

Well, lately it's been either too cold or raining every day that I have off. I'm just waiting for that magic combination; a day off, 65+ degrees and no rain. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and usually the weather is pretty good. It shouldn't be too much longer. :bow
