Clay Bar Turning Very Gooey

used my pinnacle clay bar the other day. it started off with a somewhat DELETED firmness, however half way through the claying regimen and using adequate lubricant the the bar turned extremely gooey/boggy like a DELETED. Small little bits would break off once the gooey claybar would run over any edge/trimmings. is the clay bar done or this normal?

PLEASE KEEP IT PG 13

Yup. I agree. Too much lube. I've had that happen to my Pinnacle Poly Clay before and I'm certian its because I used too much. I think that some clays will resist it more than others will. My Clay Magic has never done that and I don't think I've used a significantly different amount of lube. In fact, I usually don't even dry the car off and just use the standing water as my lube. I just wash the car again when I'm done anyway. Never had a problem with Clay Magic saturating yet.

I've done Clay Magic with both minimal lube where I only used up 1/2 the thing, and I've also used up 1.5 bottles of it and several ounces of Meg's QD. The car was dripping with lube and the clay wasn't affected.

Seems like I have a notation about Pinnacle clay to make in my detailing notes. :D

Recently I heard on another board a similar complaint about Pinnacle clay. Common response was too much lube, but since I don’t think that there is any such thing as too much lube I did a little testing. A small piece of Clay Magic (blue) and another of Zaino Z-18 into a cup of 50/50 car shampoo and water. After a couple of hours there was no change in consistency or stickiness, both would stretch and fold normally. Then they went into a cup of 99% isopropyl alcohol. After about an hour they both started to lose their stickiness and would crack when stretched. Two hours in the alcohol and there was no stickiness and they began to crumble. Left to dry overnight they both returned to normal.

IMO the problem lies with the Pinnacle clay, not the lubricant. Also IMO there is no such thing as too much lubricant!

What lube did you use? Megauirs Glass Class wash slightly diluted will cause this - happened to me when I used 3M clay.

Maybe try not to "fold in" too much lube or liquid into the bar when you're folding/kneading the bar.

I remember someone posting about this, and think it may have some validity. I noticed my Mothers bar was getting a bit softer than normal when I was using it very rapidly and folding it while it was wetter than I normally get it. Try dabbing the clay on a towel to dry it before folding/kneading it and see if that helps.

I believe it depends more on the TYPE of lube rather than the concentration or amount used.

My data points are from Zaino carwash, multiple concentrations, and either Mothers or Zaino clay. Never had any degradation of the clay.

When doing my wife's car several years ago, I believe the problem combination was Turtle Wax Carwash with Mothers clay - it literally fell apart and became a gooey glob after half the car.

I've only experienced my clay turning gooey on me once, and that was with Clay Magic.

I wasn't overly impressed with Clay Magic's clay. I like the lube alot, just the clay fell apart with the same amount of lube I used with Mother's Clay Bar, and Mother's Clay didn't fall apart or turn mooshy on me.

From my understanding it iw thw water content of the clay itself that makes it fall apart ect....

This water comes from the lubricant......

QD

Shampoo/water mix

OR Claying after a wash before a rinse (worse case here)

the clay has a limit on how much water it can absorb before it fall apart.

I don't believe it's a ClayMagic problem. I tend to use about half a bottle of lube every time I clay -- which might be considered "too much" by some folks, but I don't want to risk any damage. Last weekend I was claying the Benz with Clay Magic. Ran out of the ClayMagic lube, but I remembered that many folks use car wash and water -- also remembered folks had stressed that it needed to have lots of "lubrosity." [Can't remember which Autopian coined that wonderful term!] So I mixed a solution of 50/50 Zymol wash and water. YUCKO! :down The clay almost immediately became gooey and started disintegrating. So I watered down the mixture more, switched to a new piece of clay, and voila -- no more problem. The ClayMagic behaved just like it had with the lube.

Stoneweed1, what kind of lube were you using?

Hmm I wonder then, if a soap solution that is too strong tries to break down the clay? I mean, soap's job is supposed to disolve things....

Lynn, maybe you're thinking of YoSteve's new word "plushosity" for MF towels? :D Lubricity is a real word AFAIK.

That's my best guess. I typically use so much lube that the clay is fairly wet as I stretch and fold it. But only that day of the "soap lube" did it react this way.

:doh You're right. :wall
