<IMG SRC=http://home.jps.net/~ntaylor/images/help.gif> Recently was <S>rat-racing</S> following too closely, and I got my first small paint chip on my Jet Black paint. It’s about 1mm in diameter and down to (but not through) the primer. I’ve got the Autosharp pen and Lanka, and now I’m looking for advice and tips before I start working on it.

I just used an Autosharp pen and Lanka on my Cosmo black 2000 540 and have several comments.

1 The AS pen is great for small scratches because it is almost like using a magic marker because you "color in" the scratch.

2 It is not so good for deeper chips because you have to put lots of very thin coats on to fill in the chip.

3 No matter what AS says, you need to use a new nib almost every time you use it. If you use it the next day the paint never flows well.

4 I have found that the optimal time to use Lanka after the touch up varies tremendoulsy among different paints, e.g. the OEM BMW touch up paint hardens like a rock and if you don't use Lanka after about an hour, forget it, but you need to let Jeep T.U. paint stay on a day before using Lanka because it is much softer. I found that anywhere between 12 and 24 hours was fine and longer is probably OK as well but don't know for sure. Hope this was helpful. Good luck. Jim in MD

JimD,

Thanks for the input. Are you saying that the AS pen wants a 12-24 hour wait, or were you talking about the Jeep paint?

stoneweed1,

I’ve been working my way around the car, one section at a time. Polish, clean, etc., then 3-4 layers of either Zaino or PUPP, then a few thin layers of carnauba paste. I still have about four sections to go, and I think that I’ll do a couple of them with EX as the base. So far I’ve only played with EX a little bit, but it seems to be a great product! BTW, your handle takes me back to the '60s. If you're in California we'll have to burn one sometime!

IMO they put too many oils in Blackfire in an attempt to get that “deep and wet look. All I got was haze and smudging.

Neither EX nor PUPP have that excessive oiliness and can be easily topped with carnauba. They both have a very similar appearance on my black paint, and EX gains points because it can be put on top of carnauba. In about a week or so I’ll be able to give you a side-by-side comparison on my deck lid.

Your ///M gives me HP envy!

careful with langka-based stuff (i.e. mother's scratch kit). I don't know if I did it wrong or something, but the metal flakes from the touch up paint rubbed off as I was leveling the paint blob.

I believe I have read that the flakes tend to float to the surface...you have to shake it up real good and maybe put it on thicker than you normally would.

yep, flakes are on the surface and most all of them wipe off when you level the blob...eh, I can barely tell now so I'm happy :).

Just noticed a couple of small paint chips (through the clearcoat and paint) and am new to repairing this stuff.

Is this thread indicating that I shouldn't just get the stock chip repair touchup bottle from the dealer and go that route, whatever it is?

zenhog, isn't it a drag how many detects you notice once you really get up-close-and-personal with the car? :( I don't have any chip-repair experience. But check out David's article (click on the Learn icon) and do some searching/reading, and that'll get you started.
