Chicago: Where to get AIO???

Like the title says, are there any local shops that carry AIO and maybe some nice drying towels?

I am also looking for something to get rid of my swirls. I don't need it to be flourescent light perfect, but I would at least like to not see them in the sun. Is this going to require a PC?

Thanks.

Matt

They don't generally sell Klasse in stores. You may be able to find it at a Mercedes dealership. I've heard that they sometimes carry it. For Klasse you are pretty much going to have to order it online.

Swirl removal is going to require a PC. Unless you have been doing that kind of thing for a long time and have shoulders like an ox then I don't think you are going to have very much sucess doing it by hand. Get a PC and then find a Meguiar's or 3M distributor in town. More than likely they will be at the local auto paint supply stores. Just call around till you find one. Usually paint supply stores carry both Meguiar's and 3M products. The specific product you need depends on the condition of your swirls.

Matt,

I got my Klasse online, in the aBay here actually. Go here for a good deal on Klasse and a MF towel too!

I'm glad I got you into cleaning your car. . .

Truthfully, there are hardly any places in the area that carry the kind of stuff we use on Autopia. If so, they might have one thing at one place and something else at another.

Ok, I guess it's mail order time then. I found a store that carries Meq's stuff and P21S.

So what about my other question concerning swirl marks? I have been looking at pics today and I have seen shots in daylight and under flourescent with no swirls whatsoever. What products do you reccommend to get to this point? I am also assuming that this will require a random orbital polisher???

Thanks guys. I am becoming addicted to this whole detail thing and it's all David's fault. :D

They are going to require a machine with the power to remove swirls. I wouldn't suggest anything lower than a Porter Cable 7424 for swirl removal. Those el cheapo $40 dollar buffers at Wal Mart are maybe good for applying waxes, but they don't do that well for swirl removal. You will want to get a PC. Since I'm a Meguiar's fan and it seems like that is what you are going to have access to, I would suggest getting some #83 and #9. Between the two of those you should be able to get the swirls out. #83 is more commonly refered to as DACP on Autopia. Its a 6 on the scale of 1 to 10 so that gives you an idea of how strong it is. Since Meguiar's is what you'll have access to then here is the whole scale:

#85 Diamond Cut = 10

#84 Compound Power Cleaner = 9

#4 Heavy-cut Cleaner = 8

#1 Medium-cut Cleaner = 7

#83 DACP = 6

#2 Fine-cut Cleaner = 5

#80 Speed Glaze = 4

#82 Swirl Free Polish = 3

#9 Swirl Remover 2.0 = 3

#3 Machine Glaze = 1

They don't list anything at the 2 rating that I know of.

That might help you figure out what you need. The product is relative to how bad your swirls are. I wouldn't suggest using Diamond Cut on a brand new car with light swirls and I wouldn't suggest #9 on an 8 year old car with terrible swirls. That's why DACP is such a great product. Its about in the middle and really effective against swirls. It removes them and doesn't just fill them so you don't have to worry about them coming back after you wash the car a few times.

Anyway, that is my advice. Get a PC and get some DACP. That should be a good start. There are a few sites you can order the PC and the pads and even the DACP if you want.

On a side note... where did you find P21S for sale in a store? Did you mean S100 or did you really find P21S?

Thanks for all of the information. And the wax I bought did say P21S on the jar and it was $30. I found it at Car Boutique in Schaumburg.

The best place to get the PC is from coastaltool. They have the 7424 packaged with a 6" velcro backing plate and counterweight for $119. It's called the Porter Cable 7424 Bonus Kit. Then go to topoftheline and get some 7.5" Lake Country pads. Whatever you do, don't use the white pad that comes with the 7424 as it will create more swirls than it will fix. Lake Country all the way.

Good luck with your new toy!
