Charging Family Members

You guys have to read this article :D

Take a good look at the picture poster below. Notice anything familiar? Some guy took pics of the internet put them on a poster and sold hundreds of these posters to supporters of Bin Laden, haha ROTFLMAO, we had a good laugh at work on this one.

Sometimes, it's funny to laugh amongst all this tension.

Bert is EVIL!

Hahah...too funny! Have any of you guys seen the pics of the guy who toasted himself while burning the American flag? Sad, but funny...

like the U.S. has many moving targets to hit! I'm becoming a bigot the older I get. These towel heads disgust me! They're lack of smarts makes them even more disgusting...

Heh heh :D

I don't know if you guys encounter this, but I seem to quite a bit. My family normally wants to use my detail "skills" when it's time for a good cleanup. However, I never know what to charge them, or if I should charge them at all. My dad suckered me into detailing his 1500HD Chevy for Father's Day, which was a WRECK inside and out and took me a good day and a half!! I would have been much better off getting him a $50 Lowe's gift card!! On the other hand, my mom had me detail her Navigator prior to selling it and I charged her $150 and it turned out to be freaking spotless inside, but it was still a 8+ hour job, so I didn't feel bad. Anyway, I've done my sisters van and others as well. But, I have my sister-in-laws van coming up and it is a complete and total disaster and I know that it'll be a 10+ hour detail, or more with most of that being interior. I plan on giving it a quick exterior detail because she doesn't give a crap about it and it's white, so a quick runaround with M205 and then a coat of BFWD will be it.

I guess my question is, or what I'd be interested in hearing is what, if anything, do you guys charge, or better yet, what kind of discount do you give family members?

You don't have to reveal your pricing or anything, but just talk in general numbers.

Thanks! I can't wait to get before/after shots of this interior, it's a freaking mess!!

I ask for $25-35 to cover materials and supplies plus baby sitting for the duration of the detail (normally 9-13 hours). This is in exchange for a full interior, exterior/2-step correction, engine type of detail. I'll do it on a weekend where my wife works and get me some "me-time" in the process. :)

Hey Zack... that's a tough call. Most family members have no clue what it takes to really detail a car inside and out.

They're thinking an hour and a half, maybe two hours tops!!!

When I tell my family members... "That's an 8 hour job!", they look at me like "Huh?????"

You wanna know what I tell my family members???

"Take your car down to 84th and Wornall to the Jewell Car Wash. For $14, they will presoak the wheels and tires, pressure wash the car, vacuum the interior, clean the inside glass, dry the car, and dress the tires."

For what they would pay me they could do this twice a week and still be ahead!

The fact is, they really don't want it as clean as we want ours. They just want it to be presentable and look good from 10 feet away. All the mud vacuumed up, etc.

Good plan?:D

This is it right here!
For the select few that really know what a detail is and want it still, I will knock off half price or so.

Yeah, that is a good plan actually, she is mainly concerned with the interior, which will take a good portion of the day and she knows it. She knows what I charge other people, so I don't think she'll be super shocked when I tell her.

Anything I do will be 10 times better than where it sits now, I know that. :scared:

My sister has an "always-trashed" minivan. She has asked me to detail it and I've pointed her to the Jewell carwash. Now she goes there a couple times a month and she's thrilled~!

I've delayed this as long as possible and she's hinted many times about having me do it, but she point blank told me that she wants me to give her a full detail as soon as possible. So, I will do that for her. I will not be doing it for the price of materials though, I just can't do that, not with this thing.

Luster nailed it. I won't clean someone's rolling dumpster for cheap. If they don't care and just going to trash it, then why should I waste my time on it?

The average person is happy with an average cleaning.

Well, I just emailed her and said that I would do it for $175 actually. If someone off the street pulled it in, I'd probably either say no thanks or charge double that, but she really did want it cleaned up and wanted me to do it, which was nice (I guess), so be on the lookout for some crazy-crappy interior shots and hopefully some nice cleaned up after shots.
