CD Scratch Test

I read somewhere (I seem to start more threads that way) that a good test for a cloth's scratchiness is to rub a cd with the cloth and see what happens.....well I did....with a couple of products...here's what happened....(Scoring 10 = No Scratches, 1 = lots of scratches)

- Old 100% USA Cotton Towel (felt Rough to touch, I thought it would scratch for sure) - Absolutely could not get it to scratch the CD...Score 10

- Brand New, Not Washed, Walmart Jubilee Brand 100% USA Cotton (on label says 100% Cotton (Cotton/Algodon)) - Absolutly would not scratch...Score 10

- Walmart or Home Depot Yellow Flanel w/ red Stitching polishing cloths (sorry I threw out the label...there were 5 or 6 per package)...did real well. Scratched but real lightly...Score 7.5

- Walmart Concordia Value Pack 14"x14" MF Towels (3 Blue 2 White to a Pack). Surprisingly I got scratches...the blues did about the same as the flanels...score 7.5

- the whites did a bit better oddly enough...score 8

- Detailer's Choice Deluxe Wash Mit "Clear Coat Safe" part #2-300. This thing I thought would pass with flying colors. Softest thing I ever felt. It's a natural pelt of some sort (you can see the hide on the inside)...This thing scratched the ever lovin' crap out of the CD...it was scary!...score 2! ....now, mash mits might purposefully have a bit scrub to 'em ...but like I said...as per this test...Score 2!

PS if someone knows more about this wash mit and knows it would be safe once soaped up then please tell me because I kinda like the thing other than it's scratchiness

I think this is an interesting thread and I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more looks and/or replies. I havn't done any cd testing. Maybe I should....but I can't remember which towels I have came from where.

~One man’s opinion / observations ~

Interesting test/observations, I must admit I’ve never attempted the CD test, I use 100% cotton micro fibre cloth (DF Alpine Microfiber) and I’ve yet to see a towel induced scratch from them

~Hope this is of some help~

Experience unshared; is knowledge wasted…/

justadumbarchitect * so i question everything*

I believe that I was the first one to do so quite awhile back when Autopia was on its first version of its bulletin board.

I've used it many times and it seems to correlate well with the ability of cloths to scratch. I've noticed that everything scratches, it's just a matter of how much.

I found that cotton was the best as you have stated, followed by sheepskin mitt then boar's hair last.

I don't wether the mitt I have is sheep or boar...is there a problem with either one scratching once you get them all soaped up?

so the 100% terry was better than the walmart blue light special MF's ? hmm, going to have to go back to terry till I get some better MF's

That's non washed though...and the white ones were pretty good...and when I did these test I scrubbed like hell on the CD....so you decide....

Regarding the sheepskin mitts .. I have a few in many stages of thier life. I found all scratched a CD dry but once you wet them with car wash water/soap .. no scratches on the CD.. Just my observation. They all became very soft and slippery .. hard to describe but bordering on erotic.. :D
