CD scratch test

I often hear people say they purchased this microfiber or that wash mit or applicator or whatever and that it passed the cd test or failed. I have never had anything pass the Cd test. I purchase top quality products and wash them properly and they all fail. How valid is this test ?

The amount and type of lite makes a big differance in the results, is there a standard for what type of lite? Also does CD type matter or is any CD OK to use?

I have tested microfiber in the store and it passed or so it seemed, get it home check it in different lite and there are scratches that were not visible in the store lite. Shine a flashlite on the CD from the side and you will see scratches.

What is the proper way to do this test ?

Thanks for any help.

You might be rubbing too hard, just a light pass is all you need, no different than on your car. Rub hard enough and anything will scratch a CD. Also keep in mind that the CD is much softer than your car finish so it may scratch while the car may not. Personally I'm not much of a fan of the CD test.

Where do people get CD's for this test? I have been buying CD's since 1980 and have never had one fail. CD's are basically non-contact, so they don't wear out.

Do people buy CD's just to test rags?

Just after I posted about the "Much Debated " Wal-Mart MF towels I bought and them passing the CD test I took the same CD and waxed 1/2 of it with #26 applying it with the towel in question and allowed it to dry and buffed it off with the other end of the same towel which I think would duplicate the proper pressure and had no scratches .. but might have to use DACP or something more agressive to reemove the factory rainbow effect. :nixweiss

I always thought tat's why AOL SENT them to us?!?!?!

'cause I don't use AOL! Why else would they send them?!?!?

~One man’s opinion~

I use the ‘CD Scratch’ test as described and also the ‘Burn Test’ (no don’t set the CD alight) see “Fiber Burn Test (search Autopia)
