Care after bodywork...

I suspect that the answer is to follow the bodyshops rules, but I figured I'd ask anyway.

Two fenders, a bumper and a grille were damaged in a recent accident.

They have been repainted and I'm getting the car back tomorrow.

I assume that for the 1st 30 days I shouldn't wax and that IHG is the only thing to use?

Any other suggestions?

Car is a white 1990 BMW 525i btw.

Thanks,

Alan

I heard it was either 30 days or 90 days. Some even said its fine right after you get it out of the shop! Ask the body tech to be sure, cause they all use different paints.

Also, IHG is a polish, not a wax. So that doesn't offer any protection whatsoever. After the alloted time for the paint to cure, treat that section the same as the rest of the car in cleaning and protecting the finish.

Just came home from the body shop where I am having a bumber resprayed on my 928GT. I was told there is no need to wait on polishing and waxing. Most of the paints being used today do not require you to wait 30 days. Just ask the technician.

I heard it's okay to use IHG on newly painted surfaces. It's a glaze, not a polish (Imperial Hand Glaze ;)) so it should leave a very minimal and short-lived amount of protection on the paint.

I keep forgetting, but I'll ask Forrest if Mothers glaze is safe too. I'll keep us posted.

I have a Mercedes bodyshop told me the same thing and no need to wait on waxing.

I have a Porsche bodyshop told me to wait 30 days and use IHG if I "must" put something on in this period.

Personally, I just wait 30-45 days regardless whatever the shop tells me.

Wow, that was fast! Forrest just told me that their Mothers Sealer and Glaze was safe.

I did some searching and it seems people say #7 Show Car Glaze (SCG) is safe too. Seems it's okay to glaze the car but not wax or seal it. :)

Believe it or not, if the shop does not have a spray booth then you should wait 2-3 months for the paint to cure. If they have a spray booth then i would wait about 30-45 days to be safe.

The one thing alot of people do not know is that the shop already used some kind of polish/machine glaze on your car after it is painted. If the shop does not have a spray booth then they can get what is called "fish eyes". they need to wet sand, then compound, then machine glaze, all over the fresh paint. so chances are you car has been glazed before you even get it back from the shop(hopefully swirl free)

Just had my hood and one fender painted - picked up the car this afternoon. They told me no wax for 30 days, and they would prefer it, if I would just rinse it off with water and not even use soap for the 30 days.:nixweiss

Here is what I did when I had some paint work done recently to my BMW. After painting, for the first 60 days, all I used on the new paint was Mequires No. 7 Show Car Glaze and Meguires Final Ispection Quick Detailer, both applied and removed, very lightly, with microfiber applicators and cloths. Here is what it looked like after about the first 30 days with no wax.

I have since applied to the new paint, Klasse AIO, let that cure over nite, and then P21S/S100 as a topper. I hope this helps.

Just curious, what are you afraid will result from using wax that will not result from using a polish? Seems that one would be more concerned with polish than wax as some polishes/glazes are abrasive. Anyway, I will polish and wax after paintwork as the technician, who is one of the best in Atlanta says it is ok to wax and polish just days after painting. If I have any problems, he will be the second to know!

Don't polish, but it's okay to glaze. A lot of glazes, like IHG, are practically non-abrasive (proven by Detailking), so they're okay to use. A lot of glazes are bodyshop safe and some even say you can paint over them (!), but no waxes are, and they last much longer than a glaze and have more of a sealing job. Sealing up the paint with a wax may interfere with curing.

OK, well I didn't get the car back on Friday as planned, should be tomorrow.

Lots of different opinions here, so I'll ask the body shop. I think I'll just be safe and let it go 30 days before using anything other than water and a bit of car wash soap or QD.
