a well-known and loved part of a new car is the "new car smell." i'm wondering if anybody has seen this scent in a spray can or car freshener...

From what I understand, the "new car smell" is actually caused by the natural emissions of the plastic and vinyl surfaces in your car. If you clean them throughly enough, the new car smell should actually return. I use Vinylex for this purpose, but there are many excellent products that you can try.

My car is one year old, and friends and relatives are always commenting on how it still smells "new". Once you get it really clean, you can just use Vinylex, 303, or another vinyl protectant every three or four weeks, and it should smell new forever.

I have found nothing that works yet. The closest scent i found to new leather is the pinnacle leather conditioner, leaves a nice scent in the car. Other than that there is nothing you can do to get it back. You can clean the dash all day, but I doubt you can get it to smell new again.

Dude: thanks for the suggestion. while my current car will never smell new again, i'll remember that when i get my next car.

AlBoston: long live the IS300!

Ozium makes a new car smell that I like a lot. Unless you can make a smell that contains the odor of carpet glue, dash glue, and new leather or cloth then you won't ever really capture the smell again. Ozium has always been my favorite for making cars smell clean again. Their New Car Smell is really strong too. I close up the car after I spray a few shots in it and really let it soak in. Then I air out the car by opening all the doors for about 10 minutes. People really enjoy the scent. I'd recommend it if you are looking for a new smell. It really comes close to that original "new car smell" that we all miss.
