Can you re-glue the Velco?

braindead

Gotta love those curves

Hey all,

Does anyone know if it's possible to re-glue the hook & loop fastener (Velcro) back onto a foam pad?

Half of one has detached from a pad & I'd like to save it as its still in very good nick!

Has anyone successfully done this & how did you do it? What glue did you use?

Thanks guys...

Off to the footy now, carn the mighty Richmond Tigers!!!

On a 4" pad, I gave Liquid Nails a shot on an area that delaminated; it's lumpy and hard to work with, but boy, does it hold.

I tried spray adhesive when the velcro partly gave up on my Meg's polishing pad. Unless the velcro is completely detatched from the pad, I would advise against using a spray glue. It penetrated through the entire pad and now I'm hesitant to use it on a car as the dried glue might scratch. Maybe I'll try Liquid Nails next time. :D

Here is what I did.... I purchased some "Aleene's ORIGINAL Tacky Glue" and glued the velcro back on the foam, leaving it sit overnight with a phonebook on it. I have only used it once sice I fixed it but it has worked rather well held for 3-4 uses, you have to be carefull removing the pad from the PC. It seems to have bonded well and its still flexible, the glue is very thick so it did not soak into the foam. You may never repace the factory glue but this works to get just a little more life out of the pad. Hope this helps!

I found "Aleene's ORIGINAL Tacky Glue" at walmart in the fabric area, its in a gold bottle and sells only for a dollar or two.

I have quit washing my pads in water due to the following:

First it seems as though once the velco pad on the back gets wet it never sticks quite as tight as when it was new.

As soon as it is washed 2 times the velcro pad starts to delaminate from the pad itself.

This always bugged me as I was throwing away perfectly good pads because of velcro problems.

Here's what I do now. I use the pad on the job. If it becomes clogged or too wet I change the pad to a fresh one. During the job I clean the pad by holding a cotton towel on the pad spinning the PC and letting the towel clean the pad. When I am done I let the pad dry out completely for a few days then spin it again on the PC using the towel to clean it. This results in the pad spinning out some dry dust from the product. Use the pad again. The pads last much longer and the velcro sticks like a new pad every time. Never a scratch. Letting the pad dry completely is the key to getting all the old product out. The cotton towel really picks up a lot of the gunk imbedded in the pad. Once it dries out and you spin it and hit again with the towel it looks almost like a brand new pad. The velcro now outlasts the pad.

i posted on this about 2 weeks ago, i used 3m spray adhesive to stick the hook-n-loop back on a yellow cutting pad. havent used it again yet, but just from what i can tell it is not going to go anywhere

I've used Goop a few times and it is still holding, even through the washing machine.

I use Shoe Goo (made by the same people that make Goop) and it works well. Hasn't delaminated even after about 10 washings.

As stated Goop works well and is my go-to at work for glueing almost anything automotive. I tried sprayable contact cement on a pad once and found that it didn't last very long.

I have used Gorilla glue spread very thin...worked like a champ..

Even after washing still good bond...just spread it thin, put weight on the pad overnite...I used a t-kettle filled for weight.

hope this helps

TOL sells a can of Polisher Pad Adhesive: A one-of-a kind adhesive. Spraway's Foam & Fabric Adhesive bonds fabric, carpet or ®Velcro, to foam. It's great for headliners, loose carpet, and velcro backed polisher pads.
