Can you damage your paint in any way by blotting dry??

My car isnt exactly clean... it was dusty and it rained on it all yesterday and over night.... I drove around in the rain, got some road film on it etc.

Anyways... this morning it rained as well but then the storm passed and the sun came out and was glaring down on the car covered in beaded water

I could already see where some spots had dried leaving an etched dusty water spot... So I got out my big blue drying towel, folded it up and blotted the car dry. I made sure never to let the towel slide or move across the paint. I would lay the folded towel carefully in a spot. press on it gently and then lift away.

got all the water off the car that way (it was mostly horizontal parts like foor, hood etc)

It still left behind the little dirt spots.. but no etched water stains.

Is this ok to do as long as I wash that towel well before drying after a car wash??

or am I marring the paint in any way like this???

thanks!

Hmm, I guess it shouldn't.... just from thinking about it, but who knows what happens at the contact surface as the towel presses against the paint. Basically, I don't know. :nixweiss

If that really bothers you, maybe you should spray the finish with some QD and then gently wipe dry. At least then you'll have a bit of lubrication between the drying towel and the paint. Poorboys Spray and Wipe is a good product for that purpose. Many people use it as a waterless wash, so I would imagine it would work well for you. I use it as a QD and it works very well.

lesser of two evils

I have a water softener so I just rinse my car off and drive it in the garage. better water spots from my water then potentially acid rain's water
