2006 BMW M3 (Carbon Black color) Perhaps some of you can chime in on the hardness or softness of BMW paint from this year?

Symptoms: Minor swirls and some hard water spots on the horizontal surfaces

1. Wash

2. Clay

3. Wash

4. Menzerma IP with Orange pad (PC7424)

5. Menzerma 106ff with white pad

6. Menzerma PO85rd with blue pad

7. Any need for a black pad here??!?

8. 2x IPA wipe-down

9. Purple Haze Dodo Juice (Cure 20 mins)

Thoughts? I'm still very much a novice but this seems to look like a good set up. (I hope so, because i already bought the polish!)

particular i'm concerned about the water etching on the hood......i want to attack with the orange pad, but i fear i might be getting too aggressive?

If you're only talking paint, in a general sense I'd say it sounds good. I wouldn't worry about a black pad unless you're applying some kind of glaze.

Boston,

Can you speak to the hardness or softness of our paint? I havnt taken the DA to her yet.

BTW.....Interlagos is such a wonderful color...Must be a ZCP like mine?

First off ... great car ... fantastic color!

I have not worked on Carbon Black, but if it is anything like my Sapphire Black Metallic then it is softer than other BMW finishes but still requires hard work to remove swirls and water spots.

I think your process is perfect and it matches my approach (although I tend to use a rotary on the first polishing step). Those polishes will work well on that paint, and you should plan to hit the worst parts (bad scratches & water spots) with the IP and orange pad a couple of times.

Take your time and get each step right - the payoff is worth it. Good luck and please show us some pics!

Hi,

It depends what you mean by 'wash'?

Do you mean Rinse, Shampoo, Rinse? OR

Rinse, Foam, Rinse, Shampoo, Rinse?

The latter is my approach.

Thanks

I have a 2007 Graphite Metallic Gray BMW 3 series that I just did some scratch removal on yesterday. B/c I was worried about damaging the paint, I started off with Menzerna Super Intense Polish, with a white Lake County CCS pad. Used a 4" pad on a Porter Cable 7424. Um, all I can say is that after a 2 passes, after inspecting the work, I knew I was either a) gonna be there a while or b) I had to kick it up a notch or two. Went to an orange pad (also Lake). Another notch: Power Gloss, with orange pad. And finally, the last notch - Flex 3401 VRG. I knew the clear coat on the german cars is fairly hard. I had to do 3 or 4 passes with the most aggressive Menzerna polish, at a high speed to get the desired effects. I probably could have used a yellow pad, or a purple wool one - but I was concerned about going TOO aggressive.

At the end of the day, I think you're pretty safe if your using your PC and an orange pad. I followed the Power Gloss with the PO85, and the results were great. BTW - I also used Dodo products including the Wookie's Fist sheepskin mitt, and Born Slippy clay lube and clay bar. After the PO85, I sealed it with some Zaino, and topped it off with some Dodo Supernatural.

One thing that I also did use that I liked was the Menzerna Top Inspection. This is a spray that's designed to remove polish, and I used it instead of IPA. I thought I'd give it a try since I am a big fan of Menz products and I really did like it to help remove some of the polish.

One last thought, block off a chunk of time to do your above process. I started at 11:00 am, and wrapped up around 8:30pm, with a break for lunch and dinner.

Good luck!
