Can I polish powder coat?

A buddy of mine got some wheels powder coated a dark grey color and during the shipping they got a lil scuffed from the cardboard they were in, not scratched but I guess you could say marred. Its a glossy smooth finish, can I use a soft pad and a light polish with my pc on powder coat?

yes you can....i use polish on powder coated pieces all the time...cuts and works differently than paint though...you will need to experiment to see what works for you.....

Powder coating, like paint, will vary in its properties.

I ran into it recently on a detail with paint correction on a fully powder coated buggy.

The owner told me he thought it was painted, so I was baffled when I started to work on it and it behaved nothing like any paint I had ever worked on before.

I would say it was most like the famous "impossible" BMW black...it is so soft, even a microfiber can mar it, but it almost "stretches" so trying to removing damage is very difficult.

I tested out MANY products, but eventually settled on M105 and a yellow Meguiar's polishing pad via rotary. I then followed that with M86 via yellow and the FLEX, followed by 3M ultrafina with a Meguiar's black SOLO finishing pad.

I would say it was 95% flawless, with a few random "tracers" left in there.

Owner couldn't see them, but I could.

Here's some pics...to get an idea, the whole detail took me about 14 hours.

That's thing's a monster!! They must have had a pretty large oven. Are the body panels powder coated too?

Yes, it is a beast. It has something like 3 feet of travel, cost 100k new! :grinno:

And yes, the body panels were powder coated. Everything you see in that electric blue = powder coat.

Nice job! Curious... what's the gear hanging from the roll cage?

Thanks man, those are actually headsets. The thing is so freaking loud (Corvette LS2 motor) that you need them to A.) Save your hearing, and B.) Be able to communicate. :woohoo:
