Can I get a PC home in my luggage?

Stupid question,

Planning on coming over to the Chicargo area of the USA early next Year brrrrrr, to see some friends and do the Mother of all detailing stock ups.

Do you guys think I could get a PC in my luggage and home to England without too much trouble?

If the PC is anything like the buffers I've used it should weigh a ton! Which might tip me over the scales, especially as I will have a few choice detailing items anyway.

Planning on only taking the bare minimum stuff with me and the Wife will be coming too,so I shound be able to get away with using some of her luggage space (if she hasn't bought too many clothes)

Anyone in the Chicargo area, can you recommend some of the best places to go to get supplies? :bow

Thanks in advance.

Size-wise, you could fit six PCs (still in the Porter-Cable box) into the standard carry-on bag stacked two across and three high. Weight regulation is not something I'm familiar with.

I have to say that I love the priorities: Clothing at a bare minimum in order to make room for various supplies:up

Mr Concours- PC Size: 11 ½â€ long, 4’Width, 4.5â€Height, Weight 5 ¾ lbs

I’m sure you can bring one into UK (suggestion: take it out of the box, you’re a prof. detailer and it’s one of your work tools) I’ve brought them home for mates using the same reasoning with customs (I had two…risky but the customs guy didn’t say anything)

Hope you and your wife enjoy your stay (BTW US English is not the same as English, and you’ll be asked to “say that again (not that they don’t understand, they just love the accent)

~Hope this helps~

So are you saying I could take it on as hand luggauge?Does any one happen to know what the hand luggauge weight limit is for domestic airlines ie;American Airlines?

I was thinking maybe I could get away with putting it in a camcorder bag and as TOGWT so helpfully suggested ,claim my livelyhood depends on the PC!

But in this post 9/11 area thought customs might be a little suspicious of anything out of the ordinary but at least I will be flying OUT of the Country rather than in,if that makes sense.

I am sure you can do it.

I have lugged around laptop that weighs more than that.

Put the pads in the checked in luggage.

I was thinking about doing the same thing next week

when I fly to far east (to do my dad's sadly neclected cars).

But I think it is too much trouble (have to deal with 220v to 110v

conversion).

I believe the Lake Country pads everyone uses with the PC are available at Murray's Discount Auto - they have lots of outlets in the greater CHI area.

I'm guessing there are Lowe's there for the PC itself, too.

Is the UK 110 or 220V? If 220 be sure to get a converter that can handle the job. Also if you are 50hz instead of 60hz the PC will run slower.

I want to stock up on everything, basicly everything that has to be imported like Meguires is more expensive ie; NXT is 15 Pounds (about 23 dollars) of course you can get everything over the net but then shipping and insurance costs raises its head.

So really some where I can pick up most products discussed on the board esp the more professional Meguires products which we dont hace access to in the UK yet.

Thanks DFTowel, I will speak to some of the UK Autopians who already have imported PCs to see whay they use as transformers.

I really would like a couple of grit gaurds, lambs wool washmitts, applicators, lake county pc pads ect ect.

You'll be able to bring a PC back no problems! It'll fit into a decent sized piece of hand luggage or into your suitcase with no problems. The box that it comes in is very compact, it won't take up very much room and it is fairly lightweight.

I wouldn't mention at customs that you have the PC for professional reasons - they may well give you a grilling to see if you have been working without a work visa. Mind you, I wouldn't say anything to customs, period! Just walk through the green doors! ;)

BTW, we have access to all Meguiars pro range over here in the UK. Quite a few places on the web sell both the consumer line and pro line.

Ask for your friends postal code then you will be able to use the store locator on the Lowes website to find the nearest place to buy a PC. Also take a look at the Megs USA website to find a distributor near where you're staying so you can purchase some of the Megs pro range.

You should get in touch with Ranney at PakShak and purchase a load of MF cloths and have him deliver them to your friends house for collection. Ranney offers free shipping within the USA. Just a thought!

PugOman, nice thought on the shipping MF to my freinds in the U.S hadnt even thought of that, cheers.

Will give Ranney a pm nearer the time.

Still holding out for a Chicargo resident to tell me where to go for supplies, my freinds are in the Lake in the hills area about 30 mls from Rockford, if that helps?

If I dont say the PC is for pro use if I have to talk to customs will I not get charged some kind of tax?

Cost, and I am going over there anyway.

My cars paint are in pretty good nick but I thought it would just take the grind out of doing the Familys neglected cars.

Fair enough. I think the shipping cost is about 30 odd pounds. There are no issues with running a PC here in Blighly with a decent transformer.

I didnt think there was any Megs pro-line stuff that we couldnt buy over here now? I have been ordering it direct from Megs for well over a year now.

...... if i was in the states id be buying some EF clear pearl and some souveran!

Autopia qoute about $44 which is around 23 Pounds, Costal Tools quote $70 is is about 38 Pounds.

The cost of buying the basic kit from Autopia is about 93 Pounds. Or the full kit inc pads is about 121 Pounds.
