Can a random orbital sander be used instead?

Yes, that will work fine. A random sander is the same as a "PC". As long as it moves in a random, orbital fashion and it has a proper velcro backing to hold the pads, that's all you need. Just make sure that the backing plate diameter matches the backing of the pads you order.

I now use a Japanese-made random sander with LC pads, and it works perfectly; in fact, I think it's the best polishing machine I've ever used. Good luck!

I decided to purchase a PC 7336, the sander version of the polisher - and can get double duty out of it. I assume you might be able to buy a sander head for the polisher, but the sander was on sale when I purchased it and I simply purchased pads and a head for polishing. Still haven't used the sander, but that will change one of these days.

About a third less powerful than the PC but it should work a whole lot better than the cheap RO polishers out there, especially if you use smaller pads.

It's made for PSA disks. You'll need to convert it to hook&loop to use foam pads.

Be sure to clean it really well before trying it on paint. You wouldn't want the remnants of the previous five iso-barik bandpass subwoofers spilling out and imbedding themselves in your finish.

PC.

speedwagon,

that one is a fixed speed, they have a variable speed model.

that may prove to be a better choice.

Good Luck

How do you attach a Velcro backingplate to the sander? Can it be changed?
