Can a dent be seen but not felt?

Yesterday I noticed a few horizontal scratches clear coat (fingernail does not catch) of my medium gray Camry passenger door. I think I can get the scratches out with something like ScratchX. But then I noticed that in bright sunlight, it looks like there is a dent where the scratches are (as if something hit my car). But when I run my fingers over the area (after washing it, of course), I cannot feel a depression. Is it likely that I really have a dent that can be seen but not felt? I always thought that a person's fingertips have the sensitivity to feel very minor imperfections, even ones that cannot be seen.

As a followup, is it worth it to hire a paintless dent removal person to work on this, even though I cannot feel a depression but apparently can see it?

You might be able to feel a sharp imperfection, but not a subtle one like the dent you describe. Think if it this way, if you wanted to get one foot higher than where you are now, you could step up one foot right where you are (like on a staircase), or you could make a ramp that goes up one inch every ten feet, and you wouldn't notice that you were changing your elevation. That's why you can feel a scratch, but not a dent (well, not all dents).

My Maxima had lots of very shallow door dings in the side. I could only see them from a certain angle and in certain lighting conditions. I was never able to feel them with my fingers.

I had a 2 dings and one very shallow dent that you could barely feel but was obvious at certain angles...reflections expose everything! I had Dent Wizard take them out. I highly recommend them. My local Dent Wizard was not just extremely reasonable with pricing, but removed all 3 dents in less than 35 min and left the most minor of marring from polishing out the scuff on one of the dings, which I easily cleaned up at home with some SSR1 by hand. There's no harm in inquiring with a PDR.

Watch the "Dentman" work. He will put a vertically stripped pole next to the car, say 12 inches forward of the dent, then he will get 12 inches aft of the dent and look, at a shallow angle. These guys are very good at seeing and removing, it's their job. Tell him,"that looks good enough" and he will say "I'll tell you when it's good enough"

What is "Dent Wizard"? I presume it is a franchised paintless dent removal company. Can anyone recommend a reputable one in the Chicago area? How can I determine if one is any good? Thanks.

Yes Dent Wizard is a company that does paintless dent removal. A lot of dealerships use their service. They come to you in their little trucks and perform their skill right there.

Dent Wizard is one of the larger, more reputable PDRs around...I believe they're international http://dentwizard.com/ . I did a bunch of research in my area before actually getting my dings fixed and Dent Wizard was by far the best IMO. I'd definitely recommend them to to anyone. Check out that link, there's probably a retail location near you, if not, at least a dealership where you can set an appointment for one of their mobile technicians.
