Calling all auto body painters!! Need your help!

So I tried doing some touch work on a bunch of scratches and dings. I tried to follow Dave's tutorial but it was a lot harder then I thought. So the results were very crappy and look worse then before I tried to correct them. I actually got down to primer in a couple spots on accident (didn't realize it was so easy with 300 grit paper).

The main reason I am posting is because I brought it to a local auto place and they said they would have to respray all the panels (around 3k!). I was hoping if I posted some pics if anyone on here can let me know if they can just spot sand and respray the the small areas and blend into surrounding paint.

I will post some pics later today and appreciate all the help. I am kicking myself in the *** for trying this because the spots look bad but I guess you live and learn.

Thanks

Rich

I hate doing touchup, it never comes out as well as I would like. It's really something that takes a lot of practice, and while you're practicing, you turn out a lot of crappy looking touchups. I'm not surprised what the body shop said, that's standard practice.

Blend in spot spray has been discussed here before, I'm sure some answers will be forthcoming shortly.

I saw some guys posting about something called "Dr. Colorchip" and claiming it was quite good.

Not sure if it would help, but maybe it is worth looking into.

I have tried to upload some pics from several computers and it is failing everytime. Any recommendations on how to get my pics up here??

Just key it and have your insurance company buy you a new paint job.:D

I actually thought about that but the increase to my premium would probably be too much! Plus one of the touch's up I screwed up was actually from someone keying my car!:angry

Dave -

In know in prior posts....sounds you are a adjuster at one point in time...

Just curious - how common is it in your industry.

On one of my vehicles in the past, someone had damaged the mirror in addition to a long standing bee-bee gun sized dent on the hood. I brought it to my shop and just left it with them for the adjustor to work out....

Lo and behold...on the claim pics, there was ALOT of keying going on.....that just blew my mind. I suppose part of it was to get the panels *adjusted right*, and obviously certain areas need blending in more than others.....

Again, area which were incidental like my rear bumper which had 3 long scrapes on the side from someone parking, etc was all resprayed and *covered*.

Happens all the time. Unless you can prove that it's unrelated, your insurance will cover it. It would all go down as vandalism.

A *VERY GOOD* painter can spot-in the repairs so well that you'll never find them. A sorta-good painter will do it well enough that only *you* will know where they are. An average painter will botch it up and it'll look like [crap]. Doing it yourself will almost always look even worse (even if some people here *can* do it, most people can't).

Find a good painter and pay whatever he asks for. FWIW my *best* painter only charges $35/hour and he's *infinitely* better than guys who charge over twice that.

Not sure what you mean by "spot-in" repair?

First time trying this (quick fix for a friend).

View topic - How to fix scratches in paint?

You need to be VERY carefull sanding down the blobs. The lacquer touch up paint

wont sand the same as the factory finish. For added safety, you can tape around

the blobs for the initial sanding (kinda like the pic when the paint was applied).

I will have to look for a really good painter. I think before I go ahead with that I am going to try Dr. Colorchip as I have read some pretty good reviews about it.

If anyone else has any comments please let me know.

Flashtime,

I actually read that post this morning. That is pretty much the process I tried so I am going to see if this Dr Colorchip process works. Thanks for the link though.
