CA Duster, The Dirtier the Better?

I have a brand new California Car Duster and I have one that I have been using for close to five years, it's about as black as black get's. I heard along time ago that the dirtier it get's, the better it dust's. This goes against just about everything I know. Is it true, or should I retire the old one and break out the new? thx, Putt...

Yeah, I could never wrap my head around that. It just doesn't make sense. If you physically see the dirt on the duster and you proceed to drag the duster across your paint, how is it that you are not also dragging the dirt and possibly causing marring? I would think that you would be.

I haven't used the duster in a long time, preferring to just leave my car dusty until the next wash (which is usually weekly). If absolutely necessary, I *may* use some QD.

i complete agree with you..i wonder the same?..would rinsing the duster help or hurt it you think?

I had one that was about 10 to 15 years old - the old wooden handle one. I followed the instructions on the label - you don't need to wash, but if you have to:

- gently hand wash in cold water and woolite

- air dry

You should have seen the wash water. It was black. It took a long time to dry. Over 24 hours, on a hot dry day - in the 90's with low humidity. After it dried it was still good.

I am sure there was never marring with the CA duster. But you need to the limitations. The limitations are:

- only use the duster to remove light dust (NOT DIRT). Not after a rainstorm.

- only dust with no pressure from your arm. Just barely swipe the fibers over the paint.

All it is is a simple cotton mop no different than you buy at the housewares store! It is nothing more than that. Then they have this wax that it's coated in but as it gets dirty it works better because the wax is covered up!

THink about it, the dirt covers the wax so now it doesn't smear any longer.

I wash mine all the time in the machine, I keep it nice and clean and never add the wax to it. it works very well thhat way, just as if it was covered in dirt.

And by the way, the California Duster is not a new invention, I have a small duster from England that came in a small tin can. It's cotton and it is impregnated with wax and it also claims it works better the dirtier it is, and they recommend you buy their stuff to recoat it... only difference is it was made in 1935!

If it's black, I'd say it's about time to wash it. But yeah, I'd imagine the effectiveness of it as it gets dirty has alot to do with static electricity

I've used mine once when my car was covered in pollen 5 hours after I washed it. Worked just like I needed it to :)

No problem here. I washed it several times either with woolite or just water. I had no problems, but I'm more cautious now when I use the duster.
