"Burnishing" in wax ? What is the deal..?

I was reading an article in a Roundel magazine the other day and this guy was talking about how you have to "burnish" carnuaba wax in to get the best finish. By this he meant put one coat on (by machine only, he says) and then let it haze, and the put another coat on OVER the hazed first coat. And then do this again a third time. THEN buff it all off.

I can see why this seems like it would be good, but everyone :bow's to the super thin application, it doesnt seem like it would make any difference to do this burnishing crap...

Anyone know anything about this?

I would think slobbering it on thick (by accident of course, as always) with a PC would definatly ensure coverage with ONE coating. Then do another coat after a day or a wash like normal people do.

I dont know if anyone has Roundel but if you do look for the article that has the red e30 m3. This guy goes on and on about how he can tell by looking if the car was waxed by hand or machine blah blah. Sounds like a douche to me.

Hey I used to think that putting a thick coat of wax on ensured the best protection. Being a bit older and wiser now, and challenged to apply critical thinking by the folks here at Autopia, it's clear to me now that you can put an inch of wax on the car, but after you buff it off, all that will be left is a molecules-thick layer...so why put any more on originally than that molecular layer?

This of course is repudiated by other techniques, such as spit-shining, and then there has been the postulate that an un-buffed layer of wax would provide more protection/durability than buffing (for storage/travel purposes).

I was putting on some collinite 476s tonight with my PC and a black pad. I am wondering how to put it on thin... I was thinking to just go over it a lot and spread it out, but then I was thinking that that was just making the layer thicker.

How do yall do it with the PC ?

I use a small spay bottle full of water and mist either the pad after applying the wax to it, or the panel. The water really helps the Collinite spread.
