Bufferman, are different LC white pads same foam?

bufferman, I have LC white VC pads and LC white DA pads.

The foam *seems* to be different grades. Are they the same, or close but different?

If different, which has more cut?

Your website shows the white DA pad closer to the orange pad on the aggression scale. Or is that formating limitations?

No,, The foams are different. Some work better with a petroleum based product, and some work better with petroleum based products.

Do VC pad work better with petroleum based polishes and flat work better with water based? Is this true for all the grades: white, yellow, orange, black, etc?

Which foam grades/colors work best with petroleum based polishes and which better with water based?

The Da white and orange work excellent with water based, The full size white, black, blue, and yellow work great with petroleum based.

NO NO NO! More confusion...arghhhhhh! VC, non-VC, contoured edge...6", 6.5, 7.5...blue orange yellow black red white green...now I have to worry about what my polish is made out of?? :wall

Mike,

Its not that bad, once you are familiar with the foam texture, youll be able to tell by just feeling it no matter what color.

1) Are the white/yellow foams used in the DA and VC 6.5' pads both better for water-based polishes, or is one better for petroleum polishes?

I guess what I'm asking is, are the pads we commonly use on the PC (6.5' pads) optimised for water-based polishes?

I thought most polishes are water-based. :nixweiss

2) What's the difference in texture? With what should we become familiar? I've noticed some of the foams are more spongy/elastic than others.

For example, the DA white pads is spongy (more than the VC white), the SFX pads are also quite spongy, as is the Sonus DAS pads (although they are quite firm, less elastic).

3) And finally, my original question that opened up this can of worms :D, which white pad has the greater cutting ability?

Sorry for all the questions, Eric...but you know what we're like.

The white DA foam would have the most cutting ability. Its primary use is polishing, but with a aggressive compound, it could do some cutting. As far as the DA, the black is good for petroleum prod, whereas the white and orange are good for water based products. The foams that are better for water based products are the ones with more tensile strength, meaning they dont tear, they stretch.

I take it that 99% of the foam used is a polyurethane based foam, so I see no reason that one would be better suited for water or a petrol based product. Correct me if I'am wrong, but the white foam on the polishing pad is loaded with talc powder or a filler when the foam is being made to give it more bite. The softer or more elastic the foam the purer the foam is without the additives. All foam with fillers will break down over time and eventually start breaking off into little pieces. Fillers are normally used in the foam industry for cheaper grades of foam to give it weight and use less chemicals, but will not compress or deflect over time compared to a purer grade foam.

Where does LC get their foams ?, most proberly from Europe I suspect for the more specialized foams, as the North American foam industry lags far behind the Europeans in foam making technology. I doubt that LC would buy enough foam to warrant them making a seperate run just for a specific grade. A typical run would cost around 300-500 thousand dollars for your typical 2lbs filler based foam the last time I checked. So most proberly LC is buying some off the shelf foam locally or small quantities from Europe as foam takes up alot of space that tends to be expensive when transporting.
