bringing back the "shine" to a plastic gas cap

this is a black plastic gas cap for my kawasaki jet ski....it is really really faded.......how should i go about bringing back the original shine that it once had? the only products i have that might do the job are opt polish, nxt paste wax, and ssr2.5.

Order yourself some Poor Boys Trim Restorer



Should do the trick nicely.



Or, if you'd like to pick something up locally, you could probably get away with Mothers B2B or Megs #40
 
will my optimum polish or some nxt wax hurt it? i might just try that out..if it doesnt work, ill just pick up some of that trim restorer.
 
tommyortom- I like the LSP-approach for exterior plastic like that, but once it gets too UV-damaged/oxidized it just won't work and might be a pain to clean off :( I'd stick with something like the Trim Restorer in this case. FWIW, I recently treated some trim on a horribly neglected Benz with Autoglym's Bumper Care. Turned out nice.
 
Wow! That is some seriously banged up plastic. Before applying some Trim Restorer (which is awesome BTW) I would try to remove some of the dead plastic on the surface. I would maybe scrub it with a brush and some soap & water or wipe it off with some acetone. Be careful with acetone though it can really f-up cheap plastics on the flip side though it easily resotres other plastics. Kind of a coin flip.

Very nice! You might want to get a toothpick for the recessed circular center though.

it was race fuel that made the cap so crappy looking. anything to protect it besides armol all or dressing stuff? something real resistant to the sun and fuel and water?
 
Wow, I'm impressed at how well that cleaned up with the OP :eek: Not sure what the best dressing would be, you're on the right track to want something highly water resistant (so that'll probably rule out most water-based dressings).
 
That looks really good, you wouldn't think that OP would be able to do that! I'll be honest tho, when the oils from OP go away, it MIGHT return a few noticable places, but it is much improved!
 
Race fuel means that there is a serious amount of trychloretylene and/or methanol wich is very abrasive for PVC plastics...
