Brand New Subaru sti needs detailing

Hi Everyone,



It's been a while since I visited this site. I have been very busy lately working on cars, enjoying the summer and right now going through a divorce. Anyway, my friend just bought a brand spanking new Subaru Sti in Platinum Silver. I couldn't find the date when they manufactured the car but the paint is so,so. It still have the glue when they took off the plastic cover when the car was delivered to him. Anyone, knows how long should I wait before I can detail his car? I will be using clay, Klasse AIO, Klasse Glaze and P21S wax. Also, any alternative to P21S wax that is pure Carnauba wax? I will also be detailing a Black VW Jetta which the paint had been neglected for some time. My approach will be clay, Meguires #9, Klasse AIO and NXT wax. I will not be using the Glaze or my P21s wax since this is a pro-bono work. Any other suggestion on this pretty scratched up VW? I will try and attached pictures of the cars I work on. If it did not show then probably the car was just to clean and disappeared. hehehe.



The pictures are also taken on a very overcast day around 6 p.m.

First picture is a reflexion of my neighbors white BMW which is about 150 feet away.

No need to wait, just go ahead and do it.



The clear on *my* silver WRX was too hard for #9 to be very effective. I used 3M's PI-IIi MG (pn 05937), that was the mildest stuff worth using. Klasse worked well for me on it, I even used it on the black plastic exterior trim. When I topped it, I used Meg's #16.



I'd use something like ABC or the FinishKare system, or *at least* clay it. Rust blooms look awful on silver, and that Subie has traveled a ways to get to you. These products would also help remove the adhesive residue.
 
I will never argure the power and handling of the STI. It is awesome. But it is not a pretty car. Just that wing alone knocks it out in the looks department. Is there a nice aftermaret one available?

Yeah but it's functional if you ever find yourself going 200MPH.

Actually, the STi wing is functional at a much lower speed than that. The reason it's so freakin' huge is because it's functional. The design of three-box sedans that have a distinct roof-line/window/trunk-lid like the Impreza cause the air flow to detach as it comes off the roof. For the wing to be effective, it must be tall to catch the air.



And no, the wing doesn't generate scads of downforce (nor was it meant to); it counteracts lift generated by the shape of the body at highway speed.

P.S. I think the wing is fugly, too, but I can appreciate that it was actually designed by aero engineers to actually work, looks be damned. Form follows function.

Hey, it can work and still be ugly as sin; no reason to hold back that opinion :D



Honestly, I don't really find the STi to be an attractive car, either . . . I'm not even all that fond of how my non-STi WRX looks from a purely aesthetic point-of-view. It's stupid-fun to drive, though, and that's its selling point.



BTW, there are some aftermarket wings for the STi out there, but I think you'll find most are just as big-and-beefy as the OEM version. I do believe that you can delete the wing as an option for '05 (in '04, it was stock, and that was that). Also, since there are a lot of non-STi WRX guys that like the wing, STi owners that don't care for it have been able to swap trunk-lids with a standard WRX of the same color.



If you're looking for an attractive car that has a taste of what the STi has to offer, check out the new '05 Subaru Legacy GT. 250 hp from a 2.5 liter turbo, quiet, quick, comfy, handles like a dream, and it's very nice inside and out, IMO. It's a real step up in quality of materials and fit-and-finish for a Subaru offering.

I thought that the wing would produce about 50 lb downforce at about 80mph. From what ive read. Also, I dont think the wing delete was an option when I bought the car.



As for detailing the STI, your plan looks good. You could add something like a fine polish. My dealer installed some swirls on mine, and I used FP to remove them.

You're probably right both on both counts; I was going from vaguely recalled stuff I'd read online. My memory + accuracy of the web == disinformation; sorry 'bout that.



I could have sworn I read something about making the wing on option on NABISCO, er, I mean, NASIOC, though. Maybe it was for '06, or maybe it was just rumor. Given the love-it/hate-it relationship most people seem to have with the stock wing, you'd think Subaru would go ahead and make it an option. As far as I know, the trunk lid from a base Impreza, a WRX, and an STi are all still interchangeable, so it's not like they'd have to re-tool the assembly line.



BTW, I checked out some of your pics; the STi in white sure looks sharp. The Aspen white is almost blinding in direct sunlight, isn't it? Snowblind in the summertime . . .

Thanks a very much for all the info. I will definitely forward the wing discussion to my friend. In my own opinion I thought the wing was a little out of place also. It make the car look like a Hoovercraft. But, hey, if it helps the car to function on what's it's supposed to do then be it.
