brand new BMW detailing question

hello guys! this is my 1st post here, so I'll try to make it short:)

I got a new BMW, 2 months old, and I have a few questions regarding detailing. I did read most of the detailing forums and I kinda know what's going on:)) I bought most of the products that people recommend. My only questions for now is: since is a new car, I'm assuming I don't need to wax it for a while or polish it. But if I wanna give it some shine, I read that a quick detail product is the best thing, lots of people mentioned, Sonus Acyrilic Spritz I think. What do you think? Any sugestions? anything better than Sonus?

Btw, my color is Silver Gray.

Thank you in advance

:welcome to Autopia!

And congrats on the new ride!

Unless you know exactly how it was prepped before you picked it up it's pretty safe to say that you should at least go a head with a wash and wax to give it a good start in life.

Whether it needs polishing or clay or whatever will depend on what evils befell the finish in transit, at the dealer or since you've been driving it around (two months can be a long time in a hostile environment, or not, in a mild one).

Quick detail products are great for maintaining the finish in between regular washing, waxing, etc.

PC.

so, what wax do u recommend? I know that are tons of them out there. I kinda narrowed down to Zaino or Klasse. Btw, Klasse AIO and then SG I think right? Even tho SG is a sealant? so, bottom line is that waxing is required. The only think that I can't figure is how do I tell if I have enough wax on it or not. Sorry for the stupid questions but I'm new to this.

No. Waxing is not required if you're layering the SG coats. SG has a good reflection to it as well as the protection abilities. You can put a layer of wax on top of SG but if you wanted to put another layer of SG afterwards, I'm afraid you might have to start the whole process from scratch (Wash, Clay - if necessary, AIO, SG).

I like SG on black cars and am currently using it on my silver grey metallic 325i to good effect. Although it doesn't have the pop and shine of a good wax, it's still nice to look at. ;)

I had to make the same decision you have to after I purchased a new Maxima 2 years ago. I too, narrowed my choices down to Zaino and Klasse Twins.

I went with Klasse and have no regrets. The reason I chose it was because of the durability, protection and shine the twins provide. Even without any toppers, AIO and SG work perfectly for anything you need.

And to you're not so stupid question...

You really don't need to know if there is enough wax on your car because you're going to have to remove it before applying anything else.

I just detailed a brand new 3 series BMW and it had a number of scratches on it. This car had not been touched by the dealership. So I would suggest you examine closely for scratches and swirls which are hard to see on the silver grey which, by the way, is an awesome color. As far as polishes go Mequire's #80 would be a great choice and it is readily available. So wash, clay, polish, clean with AIO, and seal with SG. Or you could use a wax instead of SG or a wax on top of SG after waiting 24 hours.

carl, thank you for your feedback. I guess I'll go with Klasse then, no Zaino. Also, I checked my car today and there are no signs of swirl marks or anything, so I guess I won't have to polish it now. so the next step will be:

wash

clay

AIO

SG

does it sound right?

what else should I order from pakshak? I got the dry towel and a few ultra plush towerls. What other stuff should i get?

Thank you and sorry for all this questions

you may not even need to clay the car, it sounds like it's in great condition, and AIO has cleaning action that will remove any of the minor contaminates you may have

it would be beneficial for you to get some 75/25 polishing towels to remove products like AIO, save your ultra-plush for final buffing

horatiub- Welcome to Autopia! I definitely *would* clay it. Clay will do a better job of removing ferrous contamination that AIO will, and any of it that you miss will turn into "rust blooms" as it corrodes. The blooms look awful on light colors, so head them off now. There are areas of the car that are not protected by the transit film and during rail shipment the "rail dust" gets embedded in the paint. Better safe than sorry.

You might get a few more MF towels. Another drying one for sure (things happen and you always want to be using a clean drying towel). I'm not familiar with Ranney's offerings (good stuff and a great guy though) so I can't advise you as to particulars. But get more than you think you need ;)

Shoot for about 3-4 layers of SG after you do the AIO. It'll look the same after the second coat, a little better after the third, but I always find the fourth one *really* makes a difference.

I also use the Klasse twins on my wheels. Protects them well and you can wash them with regular carwash shampoo instead of wheel cleaner (which tends to clean off anything you've applied to them).

IMO you don't need a QD except for birdbombs, but that alone is a good reason to pick up a bottle of Sonus and keep it and a MF in the car. Bird droppings are very hard on automotive paint.

Accumulator, thank you so much for your reply.

This is what I decided to get:

2 Ultra fines 16x24 for QD

2 wwmf

1 wwmf glass

2 ultra plush 16x 16 for wax removal right?

2 ultra plush plus 16x 16 What should I use those for?

4 MF applicators

should I add anything else?

Also, I'm gonna use Klasse AIO and SG and Sonus Spritz for QD and to use it when I clay the car. I think we have to use some QD when I clay it.

And I'll probably get the clay blue bar.

Am I missing something? Please feel free to correct me.

thank you so much!

Hi Congrats on the Car

This is my car with Clay + AIO +SGx3 No polish before hand, and no wax on the SG, just Eagle one quick detailer to clean the dust for the pic.

Now I am using the Porter Cable with Poorboys polishes and experimenting with different combitnations. Now I am on AIO + NXT + S100 and the metallic really pops out.

PS. Read up on applying SG. It can be a pain in the butt sometimes. Just rember, I find less is more with SG.

looks good Shicks, I hope I could get the same thing with the Klasse twins. Btw, I'm doing this by hand this time, is it gonna be harder than using the Porter Cable?

also, does anybody know if there are any videos out there that show how to apply the Klasse? Or maybe I'm asking for too much:)) It woud be cool though if somebody would do that.

Shicks, should I get a Sonus Spritz that goes with Klasse? or....any other brand that you recommend?

Thank you for all of your replies, it really helps me out.

I'd rather apply Klasse by hand. You can get a much thinner layer by hand. I use the PC for polishes.

Here is how I use Klasse

For AIO, dampen the applicator with a little QD or water, this seems to help the AIO go on easier, do one panel, buff, repeat if needed.

SG - clean dry appliactor MicroFiber applicator is Ideal. Put a few drops on the pad. Working in small sections appy the SG making sure you get an extremly thin even coat. Do the entire car. Let dry for more than one hour. With a clean MF towel start to remove the SG. If you problems removing, use a little QD without caranuba or distilled water on a MF towel, then buff with dry towel.

Repeat the SG step at least one more time for even coverage and durability every 12-24 hours depending on temp.

thx again Steve, and thank you for your patience:))

I just did some more research, and it looks like people also like to use AIO with P21s instead of SG. The explanation is that it looks better and it's easier to apply it. I read that SG could be a pain to apply it. What do you think? Now I'm really confused, too much research sometimes it's not good:)

P21s is a Caranuba wax, Klasse SG is a sealant.

SG will offer much more lasting protection 6 moths +

P21s not so long, but the look may be better. SG is very reflective and shiney, but some say it lacks the warmth and depth of a wax.

I have S100 wax, wich is basically a form of P21s. I plan to put that on top of SG or NXT depending on which I use. I always use AIO for cleaner and base.

So after you apply as many layers of SG, then you can put a wax on top, but once you wax it, you cannot apply more SG until you repeat the AIO + SG process.

Hope this helps.

I've been using the Klasse AIO, SG combo topped with P21s for a few years now. It's a great combo. The Sonus acrylic spritz is a nice compliment to the Klasse. Try the Sonus acrylic glanz from time to time over the SG. It's SWEEEEET!
