Brake Parts Cleaner for carpeting (56K Beware)

Today while sitting around the garage I decided to test out a tip given to me by our very own Brad Bloomquist ages ago. The tip is, using Brake Parts Cleaner to remove stains from carpeting.

For my testing I got out an old floormat, and I decided to do some coloring. :D I made 2 blocks with a Sharpie Marker. One blue and one black. Here is a pic of my coloring. :D

Next, I took my can of Brake Parts Cleaner and sprayed right down the middle of the marker. I also rubbed lightly with a towel. Next pic. :)

Finally, after getting my cut through shot ;) , I decided to go for the gusto and totally remove it all. As you can see below, it worked pretty well at removing permenant marker. Overall, I like it. If you have a tough stain, try brake parts cleaner!!

*Please make note, ALWAYS test for colorfastness first. Also, make sure you get the non-chlorinated version of the cleaner. :up

I saw the title of this thread and thought it was a prank! :p

I guess when all else fails then, this is what to try last. Thanks for sharing this (unconventional) tip.

Wow, That worked well considering that was permanent marker. Maybe someone else can do the extended testing to see how their results compare to yours. I would, but i dont have any brake cleaner.

I've used the same technique on old stains before. Unfortunately it was years ago and I couldn't tell you specifically what the stains were from, but brake cleaner works on a lot of stuff. Worked well for cleaning stained or greasy sealtbelts too. :xyxthumbs

I use Sharpie's in work (telephones) and the ink is as dry in 10 seconds as it will be in 10 years.

Nice tip, now I know how to get out some serious stains :shocked

Yep....Sharpies are deadly!

That is prettty amazing!

Good test, Brad! Good advice, Brads! :)

Did the brake parts cleaner leave any residue or smell? After wiping it off, did the carpet harden at all? I'm surprised that you didn't rinse out the carpet... so therefore, I assume that the chemicals won't eventually eat up the carpet?

Thanks!

BW,

Yeah, it has a chemical smell too it when you are applying. The smell might vary from brand to brand. Since it contains lots of solvents it actually dries pretty quickly and does not harden the carpet at all. Also, since it's designed for use on brake systems it leaves no residue. :)

Thank you for the quick reply, Brad. I look forward to using BPC for a big detailing project this weekend. The mats on my father's car look filthy... I'll let y'all know how it goes!
