Bought Me a Gas Saver!

So recently I've been driving over 80mi a day for work and the Frontier was just killing me on gas. Filling up at a sum of over $65 every 4 days was getting old. Plus at 70K miles, it needed some rigorous maintenance. I figured I'd use that money for a nice down payment. The Equinox is being used by my mother at the time, and I couldn't make myself make her drive the truck. Tracked down a nice 2008 VW Jetta SE in Stockbridge, GA through the Carmax network. I had to have a 5 speed manual and there was nothing within 100 miles of here like that. It had the nicest interior and the lowest miles out of the selection. For a $99 transfer fee, it was a painless ordeal, it even came in in half the time they would say. It had almost 44K on it when I bought it, but have put over 400 miles on it in the previous two days. I was concerned about the 5 cylinder engine, but this thing just rocks. Mated to the close ratio manual it's a blast. It's a torquey little motor.

Those are the only pictures I have of it right now. They didn't detail it very good at all, there's alot of wax residue on the black plastic trim I'm going to have to painstakingly remove. I'll make a detail thread on it when it stops raining so much.

Ugh, really, already!?

Heh, well not serious. I noticed the dealer service sticker said thy used 5W20 oil, that's a no-no for a VW. Upon changing the filter they used was wrong too!

Hey congrats on the car! A really good friend of mine has the same one with the TDi (manual) and loves it to bits. Great car!

So the trip up on the lift was fir an oil and filter change?

What was the oil and filter they used vs what should have been used?

i like your ride. though it's sometimes a pain, i like to do my own oil changes just to avoid those types of problems. i feel your pain about giving up the pick up for better gas mileage. i keep hoping they'll eventually make a pick up with decent gas economy.

Yea, I captured it on my smart phone for grins and giggles to send to my friend.

According to the sticker they used 5W20, whereas factory specifies 5W40/5W30/0W40 VW 502 Spec synthetic. I opted for the 5W40 since it gets hot as hell around here in the summer. The filter they had in there had different end caps and to me looked like it was scrunched on there. It uses a cartridge style.

Thanks! I originally was going to change it myself, but I didn't have any ramps/jackstands and my garage is a cluttered mess right now. They only charged me $15 since I had my own oil/filter. I was able to stand by an watch. I even poked around the undercarriage to inspect it.

whats your plan of attack and products?

No paint correction this go around, it's supposed to rain Monday; I just want to get it protected. Can't spot anything odd right now. I started on the interior yesterday, got the leather seats cleaned, dash, and console area. It came with all season rubber floor mats that I tried to clean up, but still are a little funky. I'll list everything in the detail thread, but as of now it's gonna be PB's EX sealant and a Natty's topper.

Congrats on the new purchase. The money you save on gas can be used to buy more detailing stuff :)

Thank you! It only took $42 to fill it up rather than the normal $65 in the truck. That's an extra 20+ a week, I can handle that, lol.

The Jetta is super fun to drive and feels dang solid. Everybody was commenting it at the service station. I've only seen a couple around here, so I like the fact I'm the oddball in the bunch

Looking good Nizmo! Stinks about the oil my trucks the only one that I have seen run 5w20 its like water haha

Having a truck sucks on gas but you can't beat driving high up.

Thank you! Yea I was wondering at first about the 5W20; I've only seen Ford's use it. I'll miss my truck, but this is something different for me. So far in the past 500 miles I love it, so glad I went back to a manual trans.

BTW Pockets, it's being protected by Poorboy's products. EX Sealant and Natty's Red makes it look good. :D
