Bought a new car, what should be the first course of action?

So we just got a new Chevy Impala for my wife and I was able to talk her into black. I am wanting to get some good protection on it asap to help me keep it looking decent. I was wondering what the best combo would be to start it off with, the paint is is good shape with very minimal if any swirls. I was thinking of doing ES-P topped with Meguiars #26 paste wax but I am open to any recommendations. Also do you recommend putting a sealant on the wheels inside and out to help protect the paint on those as well? I am familiar with Poorboy`s products and have started using Adam`s and Chemical guys recently as well.

Since you know the pb line I would suggest:

Wash
Clay
EX-P
Natty`s blue or black as a topper

You may want to also polish.

Welcome to Autopia,

Looks like you know what you`re doing. Your process looks good to me. Most definitely seal the wheels, wheels off if you can. I`d recommend Finish Kare high temp paste wax for the wheels. You could top the PB`s sealant with Meguiar`s M26 or a PB`s wax as Ron recommended.

FK 1000p is Inexpensive and very durable and very highly recommended by many.

Try the baggie test on the paint, you more than likely will need to clay your paint. Is your paint swirl and 100% scratch free?
If not, I would recommend polishing. Maybe you were going to clay and polish, but just skipped that portion of your new car prep.

Thanks for the tips! I have been detailing my own cars and some friends/neighbors for a while now but haven`t done much lately with work and kids keeping me busy. I had an account but it was connected to an old email and was removed a while back I assume so I am starting fresh again.

I wasn`t sure if I should polish it since it seemed mostly swirl free, but I do have some SSR1 that I can run over the entire car with before sealing. I am always open to trying new products and appreciate the recommendations! I will pick up some of the hi-temp wax and get that on the wheels before the brake dust begins to build.

I had some Natty`s blue but I used it up so it looks like I am ordering another batch. Thanks again for the tips and recommendations, I hadn`t been keeping up with my cars as I should have and wanted to make sure I help set myself up for success with this new one from the start. I will be sure to post up some before/after pics once I tackle this beast.

Since you are an old Autopian from way-back, I am glad you did not get swindled into paying for a dealer-applied "sealant". I think we all know how that can turn out.

While I am old-school wax, I am sure many Autopians will recommend a new-technology coatings as THE way to keep a new car exterior looking its best and offering the best protection against etching from bug splatter, bird bombs, and environmental chemical fallout. There are many choices now from a plethora of manufacturers. Just check out this forum`s store for options. It`s a good way to protect your paint if you do not have a lot of time to polish-and-wax on regular basis, even though the initial expense of a coating seems to be more.

I use Collinite 915 Marques D`elegance Wax myself, BUT , as stated ,I am old school. I just like a quality carnauba hybrid and this wax has that trade-mark carnauba look and shine along with some lasting durability for daily drivers. And the water beading is outstanding, so when you wash your car and blow dry it with a leaf blower (Poor mans` Metro blow dryer) the water rolls right off. It`s "easy" ( I wouldn`t say fool-proof, though) to apply: wax-on-wax-off, at least in my experience and methodology. Some wait a few minutes, but NEVER let it dry or apply it in the hot sun or you will have one dickens of a time to remove it.

jricharc- Heh heh, surprised you *wanted* your wife to have a black car!

I`d sure want something more durable/protective than M26 on it (and I myself would use the FK1000P). And yeah, either coat or seal (again, FK1000P) the wheels.

The Collinite would probably look better to most people, but I`ve basically quit using due to protection/durability shortcomings compared to the FK.

Haha yea, it`s been a while since I had a black vehicle, I switched to red for my last two and man black just looks so good when it`s kept up. This car has the body lines to pull it off so I wanted to get back to the dark side... hopefully I didn`t bite off more than I can chew but I am up for the challenge, my oldest son might learn how to start waxing the car too.. haha

Hello and Welcome to a black Chevy. I have the Malibu. Love it !

You can`t go wrong with PB`s products. Should get you some great results.

Sealant topped with Wax, some of my favorite things.

;)

Thanks, I spent over $100 on the products but I have everything I need coming this week so I can tackle her this weekend.
