Bosch PEX 400 AE

Hi everyone. Just got my random orbital. It's the Bosch PEX 400 AE and should be the enthusiast version of the Bosch GEX series. It also seems to rotate slightly when there is little pressure on the pad. The orbit is 5mm. Has anyone used this RO before? So far I've been using setting 1 to apply my cleaner and then 2 to work it in. Has anyone tried 3 or higher? Is it safe? Thanks.

aaron33, I looked at the Bosch myself and decided to go with the Hitachi as other Aussies were using and recommended it. The Hitachi has a much higher RPM spec than the much loved PC and I noticed that the Bosch was much higher again, ie. PC starts at 1500, Hitachi starts at 6500 and Bosch starts at 9000 - these figure are all from memory so don't quote or chastise me if I have got them wrong :)

I have only used the Hitachi once on my old WB Ute which has terrible paint work (my test bench). It is as other Autopians say, seemingly foolproof. Only used it so far with 3M cutting compound on #1 speed with noticable results on a first pass by a rank amateur.

The quoted RPM specs just don't seem to equate to reality. I cannot give expert advice but I thought it worthwhile to mention my knowledge & experience so far using an Orbital.

Hi Hemi57! I also looked at the Hitachi unit, but I preferred the grip of the Bosch. At 9000 opm, the Bosch doesn't seem to be moving that fast. I think the PC works good at low OPM because it has a very wide orbit. How is your Hitachi going? Get before and after pics of your ute. I'm going to do my friend's MX-5 this weekend with Poorboys SSR2.5 and SSR1 and will get before and after pics as well.

Hi, aaron,

I have a Bosch too. It is totally safe and I always use it @ 6 when polishing. It works fast, and the orbit is sufficient. It will break down the abrasives quickly and easily. While it has higher OPMs, it will usually finish up nicer and finer than the PC.

I have a PEX 270 AE and it has a 15.000 - 24.000 stroke rate.

Hi everyone! Just did the detail and it was fun! I only used a speed settings from 1 to 3, which should correspond to 9000-14000opm if the speeds settings are linear. It's difficult to use it for the doors or vertical panels, good thing it has the trigger lock!

aaron33, the past few weekends I have been going a bit of spary painting on the ol' Ute so haven't broken out the Orbital again. My spraying skills are amateur, to say the least, and I will need to attack the paint I have applied with the Orbital to get the finish looking a bit better (shiny).
