Body Shop Overspray/Fallout ??

Last month had someone back into my BMW Z4 while it was parked and damaged the front bumper cover, slight ding to front fender and headlight destroyed. Fortunately the culprit fessed up so I did not have charge it against my insurance (~$2K repair cost). The good part of this was I was able to have the dealer's body shop install the optional sports spoiler instead of the stock bumper cover. The dealer did a good job in paint matching, but unfortunately did a horrendous job protecting the top surfaces on my car from some type of overspray. The overspray is not visible, but I sure can feel it. I am wondering what the best approach is to remove this without damaging my paint. The dealer wants me to bring it back, but I am somewhat concerned about how they will go about remedying this situation. I am wondering whether I should try to remove myself with clay or turn it over to them? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Doug

I had the same problem on my black Hemi. I took it back to the shop to let them clay it out. They used a more aggressive clay than most detailers use. Urethane paints require the aggressive stuff. After they clayed it I went over the whole truck with a pc and Meguiar's #83 DACP followed by #82 SFP. All is well.

Yeah, if regular clay isn't cutting it I would hit the local bodyshop and pick up some professional clay as its more aggressive. Just be cautious when trying it out on the paint.

Myself I would try clay on a small section to see how sucessful you are .. if it turns out it comes off easy .. finish the job .. if not .. resort to the body shop.

Logic says let the body shop do it as they messed it up .. BUT .. you have no control of what they would do .. they could use a rotary on it and mess it up more .. or have some $8 hr kid clay it and scratch it all up .. then throw some cheezie wax on it etc .. If you do resort to the shop express your concerns and also ask what steps they are going to use.

Thanks for the good advice. I will try a small section myself and see what happens, hopefully I can get it all off myself. Any way this was about the time the car was due for another round of Klasse and its good timing to have a long weekend. Everyone have a fun and safe 4th!

Well ended up claying 2X in some spots, but the clay magic bar did remove the overspray. Followed with P21S cleanser, AIO, and 2X SG. All is good again. Glad I could resolve this situation myself, especially after hearing the dealer mutter possibly needing thinner or maybe buffing it out. Thanks to all, I'ver learned so much from this forum!!!!
