Boat season & your safety!

Detailing NY

I am not sure how many of you detail boats, but they will be going back into the water very soon. Many of us will have to detail them for our clients. I just wanted to let everyone know about some safety things to think about before they start.

The first thing i suggest to get is a respirator. The reason for this is that black mold can develop inside the boat cabin. You will be in the cabin cleaning and breathing in all the mold spores, you can get very sick.

Make sure you have good latex gloves as well.

Keep the dirty towels in a plastic bag and take them to be washed as soon as possible.

If you have a generator, make sure it has fuse protection. You know water + electric = pain.

I found this link they may help some of you out with keeping it safe.

Glad I found this thread! I'm doing one this week. I'll be sure to follow these safety reccomendations.

Thanks NYD!

For the last two months I have been detailing boats - in Texas boating starts in March. I am currently so busy with boats that I have little time for cars except customers of the boats. I just did a 47' yacht this last week and the customer now wants me to do his hummer! The end of this month I am heading to do two more yachts about a 100 miles away. He saw my work and is paying a real good price. I do everything from cruisers to scarabs to yachts. Two weeks ago I picked up the contract to do all the boat shows. I have nine boats scheduled in the next two weeks. Yes this is boat season and if you do quality work watch the referrals come.

rlspringer: WoW! That's amazing! I hope this turns into more.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did the bill come in for on the 47' Yacht?

I don't particularly like detailing boats, so I only do a few for regular customers. All are speedboat style so no cabins to worry about. The tips are still appreciated though, Brian. :)

Thanks for the tip about the black mold. Any other tips or hazards we should watch out for when detailing boats?

Eric

Use common sense when detailing boats, a lot more hazards at the marina then on the street.

Just a little tip:

the gel coat paint on the boat can be worked more then auto paint.

you'll prolly don't have this problem but when detailing some bassboats and race boats that go 70mph or greater......do not apply a wax to the bottom of the hull....carnuaba waxes will heat up and fail.....and generally the bottom of the boat shouldn't be smooth anyways....the fastest boats have rough bottoms to break up surface tension of the water...this creates less resistence....
