Blue Detailing Tape?

Stupid question probably. I've seen people use alot of this Blue tape around the edges and trim of their car when detailing. Where can I buy this tape (any local stores pref..) and is there anything special with it (not very sticky, doesn't get affected by high temps)??

actually I would look for the Green Tape, it is designed for automotive use and has a bit more bit/holding abililty. Blue tape has problems sticking to rubber molding when going over with a polisher. Both tapes come off clean though, no residue.
 
Head to an actual painters supply store, set up an account. Trust me the lil brushes, tape, and paper rolls for taping off a high dollar car are very costly retail but about 30% less wholesale.
 
Any tutorials or tips for tape'n up my car? And do I really need to do this if i'm giong the zaino route this time? I've done waxing most of my cars and I know how bad getting wax residue on black trim can be....so i'm trying to learn the tape routine.
 
There's not really much to learn, other than taping up anything that will be a hassel if polish/wax gets into. It's just a time-saving method used to avoid time spent on removing residue that lodges itself between crevices ect.
 
that and it protects the edges of things from damage from polish staining. I cant tell you the number of lil buffer burns i have seen on trim of cars i look at.
 
I am actually switching to the yellow tape. The blue did leave glue around my badges and on my trim near the windshield. My two cents. Maybe it the Florida heat and humidity?
 
You shouldn't need it using Zaino. They claim it doesn't stain black molding, and I can attest that I got some on my car and it didn't stain. That was polishing by hand. Probably a good habit to get into anyway. Better safe than sorry.
 
I use it on the rubber around my sunroof and other places not because of wax, almost every wax anymore wont stain trim, but because a lot of the polishes and compounds Ive used leave a residue. So even though the Zaino may not stain trim, other products your using might :2thumbs:​

I've been using the 3M Blue Painters Tape, and while it does an okay job, I'm going to be switching to the 3M Green Tape next time I do a big detail.



What's funny is that I was tearing my hair out on where to find it (without having to buy it by the case), when I discovered that they stocked it in the automotive repair section at my local Wal-Mart! :)

Painters Supply. . . account. . . . two rolls a month. I suggest picking up two sizes as well, the 2" makes door moldings a breeze.



I used to dress and buff but often do a final rinse after a multi-stage polish to remove dusting. The dressing would sometimes run, rinse off or fade irregularly. Also, when compounding aggressively, tape is your only defense against the polishers' heat/friction. . . as Grouse stated.
