Blk 05 cadillac cts-v correction problem.....

Time 2 shine

I did a test spot on a blk cts-v with m105/LC orange pad. I did two passes on my flex 3401 which wasn't enough so i decide to go to a surbuf pad. The surbuf worked better, so then I followed up with PO85rd. My problem is that i did an IPA wipe down after and noticed that the more i wiped the more scratches started to come back . I'm using light pressure with Cobra miracle towels that were freshly cleaned. I know that left over polish can mask swirl marks if not completely removed, but with as many passes and aggressive pad/polish combo i did in the same test spot they should be removed. So I'm not sure if the towels are causing the scratches or something else.

P.S. I asked the owner if the fender had been repainted at some point and he said not to his knowledge.

Are you seeing swirl marks come back or the marring from Surbuf and 105? If it's the second, that's common. I tried to jump from Surbuf/105 to 85rd once, but it needed an intermediate step.

I agree with Mike, I think what you are seeing is marring from Surbuf pads. I would do a pass with a medium polish or even 105 on a polishing pad

This is my first go with the surbuf pads on paint so i'll give 205/LC white pad for a second step a try.The scratches look kinda fine like they could be from the surbuf but im not exactly sure. It just seems strange, the owner was standing there saying how good it looked after the 85rd but as i wiped and wiped scratches started to appear. He took his finger and gave the paint a little rub next to one of the bigger scratches and sure enough it made more scratch marks.:wall

Surbuf pads are great for defect removal but do tend to leave marring behind that would be even more noticeable on black paint. I would agree with Mike that the jump from m105/Surbuf was most likely to much for PO85rd to handle.

On the other hand some of these hard GM clear coats are know for being a pain to get scratches our of but at the same time marring easily. Especially on a black paint that will show EVERYTHING...

It's hard for me to picture exactly what is going on...

When you wipe the paint with IPA are you seeing a a semi-circular haze coming back (such as the really fine haze created by machine polishing) or are you seeing straight line/oblong scratches that you originally tried to remove?

You mentioned that you used the Surfbuff pads... did you use the Surbuff pad with the Flex DA or a random orbital DA? What size did you use? How much pressure did you place on the machine.

Ideally you would use the 6.5 inch pads on the Flex DA and lift the machine slightly to keep the fingers from compressing. It has been my experience this type of pad performs better on a random orbital though. You should get a fine haze (micro marring) after using this combination. If you weren't seeing a fine haze then likely this combination of was filling.

Secondly, how long were you working PO85rd in? It has a pretty thick lubricating oil, and it has been my experience that if you don't work it it in long enough it can be prone to filling on some paints.

Honestly, its both.

I used my Flex DA, 4 3/8 backing plate and 5.5 inch pad. I used as much pressure as i would when using an orange pad (5 to 6 lbs )

Now that you mention it, i probably was using to much pressure and just filling the scratches. Also i just bought a GG6 as of yesterday.

Ive read a lot about Po85rd before buying it so i made sure i worked it long enough but i think my previous step wasn't done properly so the menz probably just filled.
