Blitz on Accord Type R

Thought I would go for a little drive today. Took some photos along the way :)

Only got one decent one with my digi cam, but the rest are on my 35mm and will be ready some time this week, which I will add here :xyxthumbs

Looks nice. I can't wait to see some more. Those of us Honda fans over here in the states can only dream of the Accord and Civic Type-Rs.:xyxthumbs

so THAT'S what the euro-R looks like! I sure wish they had those wheels stock over here :o

Kaleb: the engine is basically the honda prelude engine, so it should be about 200hp and 156ft/lbs of torque, though it should have more of both, since it's intake manifold is a bit more free flowing than the prelude's. (one of the reasons that i've been researching the proccess of transplanting the euro-R's intake manifold into my prelude :D ) also, just for reference, the prelude's 1/4 mile time is 15.4, i wonder how much heavier/lighter the euro-R is.

btw NickATRvtec, would you mind taking a few pics of your engine bay? I'll show you a few pics of mine in return (though mine is not even close to autopian standards :o)

I think the Type-R part of hondas is about 15% speed upgrades, and 85% suspension upgrades. If you've ever seen or riden in an integra type r, you'd agree they they are quick, but not fast. But man you throw one of those on a curve or a track, and it's in a whole nother class.

The other nice thing in a Honda is, when you're talking about performance modifications, it doesn't take nearly as much to make a huge difference. For instance, standard modifications like Cold Air Intake don't seem to make much difference on my buddy's 'Vette at all. But it makes a noticable difference in a Honda. Because an additional 10 HP on a heavy car isn't nearly as noticeable as 10 HP on a relatively light one. With only basic mods, Intake, Headers and Exhaust, you can really increase performance in Hondas.

Hi, thanks for the kind comments :)

It is fast in a straight line but most serious drivers tend to find that a little boring and this Type R has F1 derived suspension and handles amazingly for a FWD car (supposedly best FWD car ever!). Its not stopping me from getting race coilovers though :p :D

Couple of engine pics as requested. This was a while back after my first attempt with the CD2 kit. I missed a couple of bits that I didnt want to touch for fear of damaging them  Photos taken at night so not that brill, sorry:

I only drove one once, the power is good but not great, the handling is incredible, it is like the old Mini, you just drove around looking for courners and bends :)

Nice car Nick :xyxthumbs

Not from my experience. You just don't get 10 hp out of a honda motor with just an intake upgrade. But you are right about the weight!

Intake, headers and a cat back average about a 15 whp increase over my stock motor (d16z6).

And with the Type R engines, this can be even more difficult as the engines are tuned very high from the factory. Overall HP figures arent actually that important, its gains made along the HP/torque curves that are. Significatn gains can be made in the mid-range on these cars (which is where most driving occurs), and response/driveability can also be improved upon.

Type Rs are very much tuned 'to-go' from the factory, but these are no Ferraris! They are still comprimised for everyday folk and thus can still be hugely improved upon for nutters like me, who enjoy it :D

Next up will be lightweight wheels from Japan, race-suspension, big-brake conversion and other subtle engine mods (such as a Motec ECU).

I hope to get it on track very soon, although after all my hard work in keeping it tidy, I would be slightly frightened to do so. But, at the end of the day its no show car - its a performance car designed to be enjoyed as often as possible :xyxthumbs

nick, i was looking at the CD2 kit (if its the one im thinking of? halfords, comes with 2 bottles) can you tell me, the final shine spray, when it dries does it form a "skin" like a water barrier spray or is it just a shine spray. Reason i ask, is some of those plastic sprays are a bugger to get off, unlike say armoral. car looking good, whats the BHP?

Hi Mark,

Its the 2 bottle kit from Halfords, made by TW.

The second bottle, the 'detailer' says its a resin protectant for all the plastic. So even with the high engine temps it wont melt.

Current power figure is 215BHP and 158lbft torque at the flywheel/crank, and more to come :D (with standard internals 240 BHP is possible)

saying that about all honda motors isn't quite true, because even though most motors don't respond too well with the intake/headers/exhaust combo because of the high compression (usually totalling less than or about 15whp), the i-vtec motor of the rsx is in a class all its own. Imagine, if you would, a motor that gains 20WHP out of just an intake, dyno proven :bow :bow :bow. even with all mugen parts on the my prelude, the max that it would add is 15whp :o

I'm glad to finally see some more pics of your car. :) I'm a huge Honda fan and I've never seen a daily driven ATR before. I'm holding out for the TSX to come out later this spring. I can't wait. Its about time we got some decent performance sedans from Honda brought over. The Integra was the last real good 4 banger car that Honda let us have. I gotta say that the back end isn't what I expected. It looks more like the Coupe back end. I was thinking that it would look more like our sedans do here. There is a picture of the back of my wife's Accord in my gallery. The tail lights are a lot longer. What year is yours? If its a 98 or older then that explains it.

There will be plenty more to come once my CD is ready at the photo place Jngr :D

Its actually a '99 (first year of that model range) and they stopped making the ATR, RIP :( mid 2002.

Honda are a funny bunch really and I do feel sorry that the US really gets messed about so much (if you guys had the ATR there would be loads of tuning parts!).

We have the new Accord here now, very nice, but no plans to make an Type R :nixweiss

Strange because Honda have recently made a big thing about their plans to make the Honda marque, one of a young and sporty pretention

We do get the new CTR over here, but its slightly watered down. Yes its fast, but the Japanese version (funnily enough made here  ) has LSD, Recaros, red interior, more power, 'proper' white Type R colour etc etc, and they get it cheaper as well

Nick-I hate you! Factory H22 Accords! It isn't right that you guys get them and we don't.

I guess it isn't your fault though. :p

If we want the H22 engine in an Accord over here, we have to find a donor Prelude and transplant the engine into our cars. Must be nice to be able to buy them with that engine. Our 4 cylinder engine options (until the 2003 redesign) were limited to 152 hp (98-02), 145 hp (94-97) and 140 hp (90-93). Even the V6 car had only 200 hp and it really isn't that quick-most of the ones I've seen at the dragstrip either stock or mildly modified (one had an aftermarket exhaust and the other had a cold air intake) ran low 16's at about 87 mph. In addition, you couldn't get a 5 speed with the V6.

2003 is a different story. The coupe is available with a 240 hp V6 and a 6 speed manual and Motor Trend got one to run a mid 14 at 99 mph. Even the coupes with a 5 speed automatic with the 240 hp V6 run low 15's at about 93 mph. About damn time we get some Accord performance in the US!

BTW, great looking car!
