Black vehicle

Hey guys, new here. I have worked in some pro shops during college so I have some experience. I also run a small business on the side for xtra bucks and I love the work.

So recently I have stepped it up after having doing 90% dealer work, ehich is different than personal vehicles. This question is for my own. I have a black 05 explorer(with a v8, what a monster.)

I just switched to Meguiars line and plan on claying, DACP with 8000 pad on my Dewalt, 80 with my pc and 6 in 8000 pad and probably 20 for my LSP. I dont see a need to compound. I am thinking it should give me the finish I am looking for. I shouldnt need 80 on my dewalt with an 8000 between 83 and 80 on the PC should I? I have done by hand to this point but I bought with a few thousand miles on it and the previous owner didnt care as much asI do.

Also as far as the 3m line goes one of our clients was big into used cadillac's. EVERY vehicle we used 3m rub it II followed by swirl mark remover with a waffle pad. Anyone familiar with 3m? I am wondering is there something less agressive than the rub it II like DACP instead of compounding. Also any input on the swirl mark remover?

Also how does Menzerna compare to Megs line?

Sorry about all the questions. Thanks

wagsjr- Heh heh for $15 I'd rather get something from Collinite as opposed to the DC#3, but that's just me.

I greatly prefer some 3M products over anything from Meg's, but the ones I like are discontinued. You can still find them if you want to try 'em though: PI-III RC 05933 followed by PI-III MG 05937. Both work great by rotary/PC/hand. I use these on maybe 95% of the vehicles I detail.

You can get somewhat similar stuff from the Hi-Temp line at TOL .

But yeah, the #83 by rotary followed by #80 by PC should work well, it's a common approach among those who like Megiuar's stuff.

Hey Accumulator I do have some 3m rub it II and swirl remover for dark cars. I have been thinking about 83 and sm remover as a combo. I need the one for lighter cars and something less agressive than the compound. Can you give me some combos with 3m to try. A friend of mine said the 9000 meguiars pad works good with sm remover.

The only 3M stuff I like are the two products I mentioned previously. I really *DO* like them, have gallons on hand even though I hardly ever polish. See if you can track them down. They're both mild, the 05937 has a bit more cut than their SMR but not enough to worry about. The 05933 is pretty close to #83 IMO but a lot easier for me to work properly.

FWIW, I don't really like using SMRs/etc. with finishing pads all that often. Mild polishing pads don't have any real cut and I find they don't load up as readily and their firmer feel just works better for me. Just a personal preference thing though...

These days, when it comes to my own black finish, if needed,I would only use Menzerna. Most of the time, good ol' FP II does the trick nicely. On a detail for hire, I use Optimum polish with similar results.

I might experiment on other finishes with other brands, but I find either Menzerna ( I'd recommend their complete line up) or Optimum to be the most satisfying.
