Black Pads!

Finally got around to washing the Sunturd this weekend. Thought I would give it a good cleaning. Broke out the PP and cutting pad. Did the hood and the pad was black!! I decided to do only one section of the car completely (polish, wax, etc.) as the weather was kind of iffy. Next I took my SSR1 with the polishing pad and did the hood. Again, the pad came out black!! Is it possible that the car could have been so dirty that the second pad wuold have also turned black? I think I am going to try again, but clay first to make sure I have removed all of the contaminants. Not looking for perfection on this car (the paint job is crappy quality), but I am going to be getting rid of it this summer so I want it to look decent. Any ideas why both pads would have come back black after just doing the hood? All done with a 7424 at speed 5.

Thanks.

The car is a medium blue (not sure of the correct Pontiac name for the paint). I believe it is a clearcoat/base coat, and I was told that it had actually been repainted abuot 6-7 years ago (prior to my ownership). I think I can still see the brush strokes, lol.

Or whoever painted it used single stage paint.
This happens sometimes in less reputable body shops.
Or it is really really dirty.

actually a good claying or more polishing maybe needed as stated above. We had a 69 GTO Judge as a demonstator this past weekend...there was overspray over the entire car(Bright Orange), when we clayed it, the bar was getting very black very fast from clearcoat overspray. Had the car been clayed & buffed out in the time you've owned it? Otherise is may be the Blue is single stage and just looks black on your pad:dunno

I don't recall ever claying the car. I think I might have been playnig around one time and clayed the trunk because I remember the same thing was happening last year. I have never given the car a full, in-depth detail. I generally use it to experiment with product/techiniques before detailing the garage queen or my fiancee's car. Not to say the car doesn't get washed, but it never seems to get the full treatment. When the weather turns nice again, I think I will give it the full treatment, starting with claying the whole car, then moving to PP and SSR1 (don't want it to feel neglected). Might experiment and see how the PwC looks on it also. I guess I can test a hidden spot to see if it is single stage or not.
