Black Glazing/Finessing Pad Question

My current protocol for my spring detail is the usual ;

1) DACP ( Yellow or white pad ) as needed

2) Menzerna Intensive polish / white pad

3) Menzerna FP / white pad

I have very good luck with this on my black Passat followed by Klasse or Zaino depending what I feel like.

My question is in looking for the ultimate result would Menzerna FP on a LC Black Glazing/Finessing Pad after the above yield me anything .. I am looking for the final burnish so to speak .. time isn't an object .. I do a panel a day.

Comments welcome .. especially from * The Accumulator * as he seems to be a German ( Audi) car guy and has experience with this paint.

Even tho the car was winter driven I have no scratches I can catch a fingernail in .. just the usual visuals that I am not going to have any problem removing.

1.Remove any imbedded contaminants with detailing clay (Clay Magicâ„¢ â€ËœBlueâ€â„¢) with a 5:1 solution of (Distilled water/Woolite®)

2.Remove surface imperfections (Menzerna Intensive Polish) 6/10, Orange /White Pad, speed # 3.5-4.0

3.And /or a swirl mark remover (Menzerna Final Polish II , CA 3/10, White Pad, speed # 4.0 - 4.5

4.Final polishing (Menzerna Final Polish II) with a grey / black foam pad, speed # 5.5

5.Check surface condition- spray the surface with Isopropyl alcohol (IP) by using a fine mist, leave it to dwell for 30-45 seconds before wiping the paint surface with clean, dry 100% cotton (DF Alpine) towel.

6.For surface imperfection that if removed could compromise the clear coat apply a glaze (8).

7.The use of an electronic Mil gauge (Checkline Model DEF-900) to check the clear coat is highly recommended

8.Apply a final polish / glaze (Menzerna Finish Glaze) with a grey / black foam pad, speed # 5.5

Clean paint film surface with a chemical cleaner / polish (Klasse All-In-One) as a base for paint protection product

Jesstzn- I dunno if the paint on your VW is really the same as that on our Audis. Seems like it should be but you know how the obvious assumptions are the ones that get you in trouble ;)

On the Audis I didn't notice any difference between a white polishing pad and a black finishing pad for the final burnish. I also didn't get an improvement by burnishing with Menzerna FP instead of 1Z (Pro) MP, which was a huge surprise. Gotta be that hard Spies Hecker clear, there "should've" been a difference but seeing is believing. Sure was different from what some others have reported with other paints (e.g., Mosca).

But if I were doing your (black) car, I'd try a black pad and see if you can tell a difference. Of course, you gotta do an extra pass with the white on an adjacent area so you have the same number of passes to compare.

I think it'd be great if you did such a comparison so we'd know what to tell other VW owners. I always wonder about how much I should extrapolate from my Audi experiences...they're just *so* different from the other vehicles I do.

Oh, and :xyxthumbs on the panel a day approach. Keeps you from getting careless. If you have trouble doing the correction of the worst spots, consider using a 4" pad.

Thats why I was pointing this at you.. I have done a couple of Audis and they seem just as hard as the Passat paint yet the Jettas I did didn't seem as hard.

I'm going to order the mentioned pad and give it a whirl ..

Oh BTW TOGWT in my spring protocol I appologize I missed stating the clay baring.. its a natural here . How does the 5/1 water / Woolit mix do compared to car wash soap for a lub? I assume leaves less behind than a QD would also..

VW owns Audi, so their paints should be the same, right? Honda and Acura share a lot of the same color paints. My wife's Accord is Naples Gold. I know the Acura TL offers the same color. My TL-S is Nighthawk Black Pearl. The Accord also comes in that color. I know the Passat and the A4 share the same platform. It would be silly and, most important to the VW brass, not cost effective to have different paints.

Actually the Passat shares more of the A6 The passat is on a reduced A6 platform .. The A4 is shorter than the Passat and the 4Mo Passat shares a drive train with the Audi and a whole bunch of parts. The A4 is on a 104" w/b the Passat 106".

That's what one would expect, but the paint on my VW was a lot softer than on any of my Audis, and the paint on my Porsches was also softer. First noticed how hard the Audi clear is when I had a '91 Carerra4 and my dad had a '91 Audi V8. His paint was a *lot* harder than mine was- I figured it was just some anomaly. Later, I was pretty surprised when I switched from Porsches to Audis and suddenly had trouble removing marring! After all the Porsches he's done, when ScottWax finally did an Audi he was saying the same thing.

I have *no* idea why they don't just use the same paint, but it's a pretty dramatic difference. Just something about the paint on Audis...

Accumulator which VW did you own? I know some models are made all over the world .. the Passat is only made in Germany .. maybe thats why its like Audi paint .. I have done 3 Passats .. mine and 2 others and all were hard paint like the Audis I did .. The Jettas I did were a lot softer and forgiving.

Well its finally been warm enough here to attack the Passat .. and I got to try the black finishing pad with Menzerna FP.

First off I did the drivers front & rear doors a) to c) d) to the drivers front door only;

a) Menzerna IP on a Megs cutting pad ( Winter fine scratches etc )

b) Menzerna IP on a LC white pad ( to clean up the haze )

c) Menzerna FP on a LC white pad

d) Menzerna FP on the Black Finishing pad. 3 passes.

Under a 1000w halogen and in natural sun I couldn't tell the difference between this on the drivers front door and the drivers rear door.

Next experiment I went to the passenger side and I did a) to c) on the front door then I masked 1/2 the door top to bottom and made 3 passes with the FP on the black pad on 1/2 the door.

I removed 1/2 the tape and with a 1000w halogen I couldn't see a difference I then pulled the car out to natural sunlight and knowing that it was done I could see a fient line.

The difference was so minute that even if I told most of you here which door it was I doubt you could find the line. Well maybe *Accumulator* might but then I would have to slap him for being so nosey.

None the less I did this final step from the belt line up on the car .. just cuz ..

Das my update .. sort of a waste of time and $$
