Black and Decker a rebadge Dewalt 849?

Is it true that Black and Decker is a rebadged Dewalt? If its true, would you buy the B&D instead of the Dewalt?
 
I doubt it...but I guess it could happen.



I hate Black & Decker power tools. Everyone I bought has died an ugly death. Crap products but great mass marketing. All too common.



Get the Makita 9227 in any event. I got one and it's lighter than the 849 and just terrific to use.
 
For what it is worth, Dewalt is a rebadge of Black and Decker. In the 80's whan Makita started taking over the tool industry B&D took a huge hit because their tools were crap! Dewalt was their answer. If you want quality and long lasting performance get a Makita. Dewalt is a good tool, and yes they last a long time. But nothing is built like a Makita. My Dad used to tell me about his tours of the factories in Japan when I was a kid. sorry for my tangent, but tools are a passion of mine.
 
I've had the exact opposite experience with Makita. I'm sure they're fine now but I've had much more durability with DeWalt when it comes to reliability over the years. They're both good machines, just different style. Go with what works best for you and you'll be fine.
 
Being in a family comprised mostly of construction business owners ( I use this term loosely because they are all in some form of construction whether it be boats, houses, fiberglass swimming pools, etc.) we've gone through our share of tools. Porter Cable is their #1 choice, but in some cases their products are just too big and heavy to use. After Porter Cable is Delta, Bosch, DeWalt, and finally Black & Decker. Almost every Makita product I've seen them use endes up in a truck bed broken. They just don't seem to hold up like the other do.



The currrent brand of choice is DeWalt since parts and supplies are readily available everywhere, they are priced right, and they last a very long time.



For some reason though, thinking in terms of warranty length, the Black & Decker has a better warranty over the DeWalt. Using batteries as an example, DeWalt batteries have a 2 year swap out warranty vs. the 4 year B&D.

I agree, I've had the 6138 for 10-11 years and it still runs great. The trigger switch probably needs replacing now but other than that no complaints.:)

Just FYI, this is not true. DeWalt is a division of Black and Decker, but they aren't just a rebadge. B&D tools are practically all made in China. DeWalt tools are made in Easton, Maryland.
 
In the case of the Dewalt 849, it is identical to the B&D 6138 except its yellow. I have used them both and there is no difference in their feel or operation or look other than color.

The Snap-On variable speed buffer should look very similiar to my favorite yellow buffer also...:o All three are the same machine.

The Dewalt line is no longer made in the US as of this year! B&D industrial is and was the same stuff. I am not a liar.

Whatever the case, all I know is that I have had trouble with B&D since the 80s when I started buying them. DeWalt has been excellent based on the power tools I have purchased for my house the past 2 years.



I think however Makita is another excellent brand. I queried Mike Philips at Meguiars and he prefers the 9227 as a rotary. I've been using mine for a month now and it seems bulletproof so far.
 
Thank you all for the response, because where i am now currently, I can't get my hands on the Makita 9227. I guess i'll get the dewalt instead of the B&D.
 
Is the Black and Decker 6138 a tool that B&D still makes? Is it possible it's only sold outside the US as a Black and Decker?



Are you all saying the Easton, MD manufacturing plant is no longer there? I took a rather extended tour of it about 10 years ago in an engineering class. The folks there seemed pretty proud that they made quality tools in the US. It's sort of a shame if B&D flushed that down the crapper.
 
To my knowledge, it isn't still made or at least nothing comes up in a search. I have my own 6138 and have used both the 849 and Makita 9227 at Meguiar's.
