Black 06 ZO6 Need I Say More!

This one came to me through Autopia. He wanted to see what I could do with it. He had tried the PC route bu it did not touch the light swrils and scratches. Overal the Vette was in great shape. The Vette is a year old and Black. To say this one KICKED MY BUT is a fair statment. It took me about a half an hour to get the pad/polish combo right. Here was my process;



QEW wash with some QD

Polish with Menzerna 106FF Yellow LC pad and a Rotary at 1700 (2 passes on several pannels)

OCW as a wipe off sealant

topped with #16

Hyper in the wells and on the tires

Clean the glass with CLARITY

(spent an hour removing old wax build up in body seams)

Yes great work on the black C6. I will have to try 106ff with a heavier cut pad (yellow LC) next time. It is very hard to get the PITA clear on C5 and C6 vettes perfect.
 
Now how about seeing some pics of your Ody? You've helped a ton of us over on the Ody forums but we've never seen the Ody. :-)
 
The car looks great. But as a fair judge, I might question the idea of 1700rpms, and a yellow pad. I know vette clear is hard (I have never polished one, only wax), but that pad/speed combo, no matter what polish, sounds like buffertrail heaven.



Im not frowning on the detail, it looks very glassy, but a good sunshot would clear that up...

In my defense I tried 4 different pad and polish combos. None of them touched the swrils. And I tried a compound, Menzerna IP which just hazed the finnish slightly. The owner saw the car in full sun and was impressed to say the least. I found that on a new Vette the 106 is the way to go. I was able to remove about 90-95% of the defects in one pass. So i think I have been as gentle as I can on the clear.

Thanks. I have not taken any pics for a long time. The front end is a mess of chips and needs to be repainted soon. My wife just backed into a sign last weekend! Needless to say the paint looks great but it is taking alot of abuse.

The yellow pad I used was a well worn pad that had polished alot of cars. So maybe a new pad would have had more cut. I was impressed at how this combo removed all but the deepest scratches and left a fantastic finish. It did take along time this way but I wanted to be nice to the clear and not compound out the whole car.
 
I don't doubt the swirls were removed. I question if the finish was left with buffer trails (marks that lightly show where the buffer was moved over the finish).



Can someone else attest to this so I don't look like some jack trying to frown on someones detail.

On a vette I usually go with EC/OP mix w/ yellow LC pad 1500-1600 to get most of the defects out. Then follow with 106ff/RMG mix and a green P2 pad at 1400 or so. If I can just go 106ff and a pad with good cut, that would be great!

Not neccesary to roll you eyes, as I was not bashing the thread. I was questioning a very questionable technique.



Most paints even with a polishing pad halo and trail on black colors. Heck I need a finishing pad and 106ff to leave a perfect finish. Its a obvious thing to question the result.

I did go back and look at the Hitachi. I read the speed at position 2 and one click past which is like 1300 rpm not 1700. My mistake. But I do not think my technique is questionable, and I do think you were bad mouthing for what is is worth, or that is the way I took it . It just teaches me a lesson not to post so early in the morning when I am in a rush. I made 2 mistakes, 1) in the title, and 2) in the speed of the buffer. I agree that most black cars I have done with the Rotary will leave a trail if you are not careful. But this is by far not the first car I have done with the rotary.

Here's mine over at autogeek.net. My front bumper is taking a beating...the silver paint with black primer doesn't help in hiding things either...you would think that they would have a color matched primer by now.

You still liking the Clarity? I'll be geting some as soon as the case of NXT runs out (it'll be a while).



Nice job on some hard black. I managed to grab some #16 a while back.. should go nice on the 6.
