Best way to maintain car in winter

Hi, this is my first post (even though I have been surfing here fir a while - it is an addiction).

To the question: how should I maintain my car during the winter months (moving to Florida is not an option, sigh!!). I know that using auto-car washes is bad for the paint, but, what other way is there.

Thanks for your help. :bow

Since we can not denote what region / country you live in these answers are general.

Mild winter ( very little snow and roads not treated with salt and sand

- wash and wax ( to re-new carnuaba topper) once a month when temperature above freezing.

-Moderate to Severe winter invest in a "beater"FWD car or 4x4:xyxthumbs

try a polymer wax system like zaino, Klasse, Blackfire, etc. This will help to protect your car for longer since you may not be albe to wash as regularly.

I may be wrong, but I think the polymers will apply at temps lower then what a carnumba wax will work at

Thanks for the input fellow Autopians.

BlkZ28Conv, I have finally updated my profile!! As you can see, I will probably fit in the second category since the months of February and March it gets real cold and frosty here.

Medic, I agree with you and am using AIO and SG as the foundation (as stated above, FINALLY!!, the profile has been updated.

To maintain those weekly washed look, would it be o.k. to use a QD to keep the car clean if the weather doesn't cooperate, or, am I inviting the possibility of scratches?

I believe this is the worst time of the year to use a QD without washing. After growing up and living in Boston for over 40 years my procedure for keeping a car clean always started with a good, but quite foolish appearing to the neighbors, WASH. There is just too much sand, dirt, periodic precipitation (wet / drying cycles of dirt filled rain and snow, etc) to just Cali dust and QD. Silver maybe very forgiving but one bad session with a QD on a black finish will haunt you until Spring and a SMR'ing day. Being an Autopian makes it difficult to allow ones car(s) to remain dirty but without a "beater" and living in a severe weather zone this quirk must be silenced for the long-term condition of your finish(es). I go to those "Touch Free" car washes that only use water and no brushes...

I make sure to renew the carnuba topper with plenty of Clear Pearl if it is too cold to wax (usually is)

I do add a few coats of SG before the winter starts
