Best to remove brake dust??

I know there should be tons of info around for this, but I wanted a specific since my rims are all like this one. This is probably build up for an 87 Maxima, probably never cleaned in that area, so I'm talking of about 19 years of buildup!!! :scared: :scared: Anyway, any idea on what's the best to get rid of it?? apart of a nuke!! :LOLOL It's scary just to see it!! :soscared: :soscared: :hide:

P.D. Look closely since I had one bigger and it got screwed. The rim is bent so I found a place that will do it tomorrow for me.

without getting into scary acids, i would do what Maximus 96 suggested. However, I would use PB Spray and Rinse and a couple different kinds of Meguair's brushes.

Wheel Brightener is just as or more effective as Poorboys AND costs less. Order up a gallon of WB and go for it. I can't imagine that much else is going to remove that kind of buildup that even resembles being mild.

I've read this a couple of times. I've been thinking of switching brands lately, not b/c of costs, but b/c S&R is constantly clogging up my sprayers. Bottle after bottle eventually stop spraying after a day or two with S&R in it. How thick is MWB? I have hesitated getting it b/c I am not always pleased with Meg's quality, but this stuff sounds pretty good.

Sounds like acid killing the rubber seal in the spray head though I could be wrong. WB has the consistency of water. It's a very good product with a very good price and it's very effective. I have killed a spray head in the 4 months or so that I've been using it. My only wish is that I had started using it sooner.

I'd try blasting A-Z or another very strong wheel cleaner and agitating with a wheel brush. What does not come off might with an old clay bar.

I would go this route.

would you ever use a power washer on something like this?

Doubt a power washer is going to do much.

Need to resort to heavier cleaners.

I have the same problem with my barrels. Not worry about it this year, but when they come apart they will be treated like stated above: wheel cleaner and a clay.

I think the first thing I'd do is hit it with a power washer, then use a heavy duty acid based cleaner. Let it soak, agitate with a brush and rinse. Then start the process over.... and over.... and over....

You're going to have to use an acid-based cleaner to get much done. Meg's WB or Poorboy's S&R are pretty good, and pose little to no risk to use. You could pressure wash the rim, spray them on, agitate with 0000 steel wool and rubber gloves, then pressure wash off. I wouldn't reccomend HF brightener unless you are experienced in chemical safety, it does an amazing job, but the risks are just too high.

I tried with a power washer on my wheels -over 10 years old. Nothing at all. This is a commercial grade, with heater. It isn't your off the shelf Sears PW and it did nothing.

Gonna need to call in the heavy duty cleaners, a good stiff brush and elbow grease.

I have the same problem with S&R...Megs WB is not thick..I got some and mixed it 1:3 parts water and it worked great...just put it in my 2 gallon sprayer...18 dollars a gallon from local store..do a search on megs site to see who carries their detailers brand...most places don't stock it but will order it for you..
