Best Odor Eliminator? Gonzo bags?

Hey guys. A few days ago I posted up a stench problem I had after receiving my 560sl and finding out that the soft top had been stowed away in the compartment wet. I cleaned the well with a citrus degreaser and even took all the carpet and padding out of the car and trunk and shampoo'd it. The padding wasn't wet and I noticed no signs of mold or mildew, but the stench still comes back.

I stuck one of those suction-cupped baking soda things in the trunk, cabin, and soft-top storage well, but I think I might need something a bit more powerful. A few searches brought up those Gonzo lava bags, but I didn't see anything else about'em. Should I go give those a shot?

What would be the best, and preferably cheap way to get rid of the stench for good?

try "damp-rid"

you can get it at walmart or a drug store

it should work but it takes a long time

months?

I use it when I put one of my camaro's away for the winter

Go to Auto International and order some "Odor Terminator".

It flat out works and is the best odor killer I have ever used.

That sounds pretty intriguing Anthony...do you know if it's available OTC anywhere? I'll probably order it if that's the only thing that'd be effective, but I really need something that I can go pick up and have working quickly. Thanks.

When it comes to a recurring stench, I don't think having it "work quickly" is even feasible. I really think this is going to take some time for the odor to go away.

As far as I know it's not an OTC product. Call Auto International, ask for Ron Ketcham, tell him Anthony from San Antonio recommended their Odor Terminator for your problem and he can best explain how to apply it.

It worked great on a Porsche Cayenne that ran over a dead deer. It had scraped some deer flesh off the carcas and basically "fried" onto the exhaust.....needless to say it stunk BAD after a few days!!!

We put the Cayenne up on a lift and pressure washed it then I sprayed all areas down with OT and it left behind a nice clean "bleach" type of smell. Buy some......it can be used even on your wet dog to get rid of that doggy smell :2thumbs:

Thanks Anthony...I'll probably give those gonzo bags a shot since they're only 4 bucks at LNT, but if that fails, I'll definitely give him a call and order some if it fits the bill.

:thx

You could use a deodorizer/odor killer product like Odoban (linky) available at Sams and some Walmarts if you need an OTC solution. It is a sanitizer, deodorizer, mildewstat, disinfectant, and virucide all in one concentrate. I used it to remove the last traces of the rotting food smell from my refrigerator after it sat without power for 3+ weeks after hurricane Rita.

If you can reduce the odor singnificantly, but still have a slight smell, try placing shallow pans of charcoal briquettes or clay kitty litter in the car with the windows rolled up--these will absorb any lingering smells. The more surface area you can cover the better. Change out the pans daily and try to move the air inside the car around with a fan.

Or, seek out a pro detailer who has access to an ozonator.

Also, he might be able to rent an ozone generator from a janitorial supply store. There's a store here in Omaha that does that; it runs $25/day.

FOLEX or Kids 'n' Pets will handle organic problems.

NEVER put the convertible top away when wet.

check with your local fire dept. they have chemicals that can get rid of odors. u can try boxes of baking soda. keep applying it to the carpets, let it sit, vacuum until the smell finally goes away. dont forget the trunk it holds odors.

Odor elimination is a process, Like cleaning seats, carpet, polishing paint.

One step rarely ever works.

Junk the pad and replace it.

next re clean everything with a dedicated carpet/upholstry cleaner. I recomend ultrapac traffic clean for carpets, and fine fabrich upholstry pre spray for the soft top. Then Set up air movement and dry for at least 2 days. Then insert an Ozone machine for a good round or two. After that reinstall carpet on new pad. Then lightly fog the car with an acceptable odor, leather, cherry ect.

Why fog the car?, well Odors are very poerful things. 70% of the time the mear though of an odor will produce it in a given room. It's even higher for women. By introducing an odor of a more powerfull nature, One that hits your senses before you have a chance to think. (do i smell mildew) you greatly reduce the chance to have "mental odor". After 2-3 months the fogged odor will have disapated along with much of the memory of mildew odor. Giving you a much higher chance of success at dealing with it.

If you are wondering how i know. I was my companies odor control specialist for 6 years. I've cleaned nearly every type of odor, for nearly every reason. It is a process. Skipp a step and your results will suffer.
