Best Approach for a Black CRV

Just purchased a preowned black 2002 Honda CRV and overall the vehicle is in great shape. Only thing is the previous only seem to generally take the car through a car wash and the finish has swirls and definitely needs a good cleaning/wax job.

I am familiar mainly with the Meguiars line of cleaners, polishes, and waxes.

I am interested in suggestions on the best approach to take to get it looking it's best without using a ton of products.

Thanks!

Staying within the meguiars system I would say that you should pick up some #83 dual action cleaner polish, #80 speed glaze, and some #82 swirl free polish. Use whatever last step product that you want, on black I would go straight to NXT.

Hopefully you have a PC and some high quality microfiber towels.

Welcome to the wonderful world of black Honda paint. Is it nighthawk black pearl? It has been my experience that any honda paint(especially black) marrs if you look at it wrong.

One thing is for sure, you will be a skilled detailer when you trade this car in!!!

*EDIT* How rude of me not to welcome you to DC!!! Glad to have you here.

Welcome to DC. If you don't have a machine to polish you could go the ScratchX, ColorX, NXT route. Those are some good Meg's hand-usable polishes/wax.

Welcome to DC & CR-V ownership!!:welcome

I have an '04 EX in Mohave Mist - easy to keep clean, but won't show the results the way your black one will!!

Also, forgot to ask about cleaning the wheels; is it better to actually use a wheel cleaner when washing them or just rinse them off and then wax them too?

Hi Smooth :welcome
Congrats on the new ride.
NXT line is a Meg's line (also #9 and #7) that is readily available localy .
I have used there wash, but not their other products, but I hear that they nice reviews, and can be worked by hand.
Poorboys swirl removal products (SSR1 & 2) can be used by hand as well for swirl removal, I think that 2.5 is recomended to use by machine.
For wheels I use EO A2Z does a nice job.

Search around a bit and you will find alot of good products :D
Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the welcomes!

What exactly is NXT? I am looking to do this by hand.

NXT is Meg's newest wax. Use it after polishing. It will cover some small swirls. It can be used by hand.

By hand if you don't mind ordering online I would look into some poorboys products. SSR1 and 2 will be about as strong as you will want to go via hand application. They are much easier to work with by hand than the meguiars products.

The NXT and GC do differ a bit, I use both so..... I think that the NXT is provides a better look on my paint it is more clear and provides more gloss and depth. The GC does turn the paint darker and is no slouch IMO when it comes to looks. I find NXT to more durable than GC in my neck of the woods. On black, I would reach for the NXT.

On my own personal vehicles I do not have a need for wheel cleaners.

Hope this helps.

^ Yes, IMo there are subtle nuances that the trained eye can see.

The #26 is darker and can be streaky in certain situations. High humidity seems to be the casue in my experience. Nothing a QD won't even out, but still there. #26 is also a blend of polymers and carnauba. I find it to be fairly durable for a carnauba(I can squeeze about 10 weeks out of it).

The GC is turns the paint darker than #26, but only a tad bit IME. The GC has a very "handsome" wet look to it. IT too is a blend of polymers and carnauba, but is not the most durable wax in the world (typically I reapply after a month).

The NXT to me gives a look that has to be seen. On my blue honda paint it gives me the look that I want. It is deep, wet, and looks crystal clear. Again this is my paint and my preferences. NXT is fully synthetic, but don't expect Klasse like durability. I have seen it go 10 weeks though, the looks had declined a bit, but it still beaded well. Whatever that means.

So it sounds like the NXT is one step further than the Gold Glass.

Define "further" know what I mean? It just comes down to personal preference and your goals/needs for your paint.

I use both, but lately I have been using NXT on everything. It just looks so good in my eyes.

SilverLexus,

I saw those pics on Autopia, AWESOME. I really love P21S, and was planning on picking up some S100 for my planned November detailing of my cars (one red, one black), those shots are causing me so much agony over my decision to not get Souveran... Ok, I'll get the Souveran... No it's P21S...

Man, I've made my final decision at least 10 times, is this what it's like to be John Kerry?

(That really was a joke, GO BUSH!)

By "further" I mean it seemed like Gold Glass was an excellent product, but actually bout NXT today and definitely agree, there is something about it that seems better. Only did a portion of the vehicle today, but used Meguiars Cleaner, then followed with Show Car Glaze #7, and then NXT...finish looks great and took care of the swirls.

As for Pinnacle Souveran, sounds like a great product, but $60 for a container wax is well beyond my interest.

Welcome,

I also have a black 2001 CR-V. I have to agree with EBPcivicsi about these cars showing scratches by looking at them the wrong way. I recently did a full detail using SSR2.5, SSR1 and Pwc and topped it with 4*UPP. Man was it slick!

However, I just saw the car in direct sunlight and I could see all the swirls are still there. I think I'm going to go the route using Meguiars DAC and Swirl Free Polish topped with NXT.

The day I get all the swirls out I WILL be a pro!
