My Dad has one, but fortunately, we don't have snow here in Australia where I live. We only have kamakazee Kangaroos. I hit one with my Integra, $4.5K later, it was repaired :(

Anyone who can afford a Porsche should be driving a winter rat.

I was behind someone this morning trying to drive his Boxster up a hill. The streets were plowed, (we got about 8 to 10 " of snow last night) but he got it stuck at the bottom of the hill.

Typical Brooklyn, NY driveway. My driveway is smaller and I managed to squeezed in with my Accord. If your are fat, say over 195lb fellow, you cant never squeezed your arse out. :)

Well, I wouldn't go *that* far, I commuted in my C4 with snows on it back when I was teaching. I was pretty careful about where I parked it though! That's a shame...

I disagree.

The car has dedicated Blizzak LM-22's. I have driven it in 12-15 inches of snow this year with no problems including going up hills to get in and out of my subdivision.

These cars with the factory tires are treacherous on winter roads (as would be any SUV, front wheel drive or AWD car with summer only high performance tires) but when the proper rubber is installed they are quite good in the white stuff. Rear wheel drive with 60% of weight over the rear wheels means great acceleration. PSM (Porsche Stability Management), an option on these cars (non all wheel drive cars) is also quite handy in preventing any unwanted spins or slides and helps the car to handle quite well. Add a little bit of common sense and some winter driving skills and you have a perfectly capable winter car that is really only hindered by ground clearance (which would be similar to many front wheel drive cars).

bet993- :xyxthumbs Over in Germany people would scoff at putting a Porsche away for the winter.

Oh, and yeah, you're right about AWD cars with summer tires. The S8 is a real handful if you try to drive it in the winter with the summer compound 245s. In my experience, tires matter a lot more than F/R/AWD.

After driving this car in the winter I can see why they would in Germany. It is one of the most enjoyable cars to drive in snow I have ever had the chance to drive. It is sure footed, predictable handling and responsive.

Truthfully the only thing that concerns me are the other idiots on the road but you can't be held hostage by other peoples stupidity (plus where I live stupid on the roadway exist year round).

I also could not agree with you more with regard to tire selection. People are foolish to think that AWD, 4-wheel drive, front wheel drive, traction control, ABS, etc. are substitutes for good tires. The difference between all-seasons and winter tires is night and day.
