BAD Over Spray Removal (DONE) PICS! (56k warn)

Tex Star Detail

Formerly TexasTB
I was contacted by an individual about removing some over spray. I said I was able to do it, and needed to see the vehicle to give a quote.
The vehicle was not his, it was a neighbor to his house, well, a house he rents out. Seems he was staining his fence with a sprayer. The wind kicked up, and that about sums up where I am going.

Went to look at the car, Silver in color, and went ready with clay and a few other things to do a test spot. Came up nicely with clay, so an appointment was set. Before I left, they asked, "what about the black car?" Seems both of the cars had over spray on them.... I told them I heard nothing about a black car, so I would have to contact the owner of the other property and ask.
I booked the black car as well. Finished up the Silver car, not a problem. Finished up the black car today...big problem. The overspray set so long on the paint, it actually 'baked' itself to the paint. Major pain to remove. I think I did almost 5 hours of claying.

Over spray on the paint, glass, trims, tires, rims, etc..... on both vehicles.
Both are done, finished, no more......or is there?????? LOL

Another guy came forward. He actually is the tenant renting the house where the fence was stained. His car is covered HORRIBLY! When looking at it from an angle, it looks like someone dumped a shaker of salt on the car. That is how rough it looked! This car is Green in color.

Here are a few pics of what I was up against...

Silver car... Only 2 pics. Camera died out.
Over spray is reddish in color...

Here is the green car that is worse. It has a LOT of over spray. The finish is extremely rough. I do not have this one set in an appointment yet....

Just a thought Chris, Have you tried the clay pad?

Paintwork Clay Pad Applicator

After going through a rough overspray job myself not to long ago I got my hands on one and plan to try it on the next overspray job. I imagine it would make short work of the larger panels.

Anybody here try one of these?

Hey Troy

I can only speak for my self,

I have not used the clay pad product but from what I see using that style for claying you loose 2 important factors.
1. the feel of the clay against the surface of the veh.
2. the sound of the clay against the surface of the veh.

Why is feel so important? glad you asked... after getting comfortable claying a veh. just by the feel or resistance of the clay on the surface you can tell if you clay is working the bonded contaminants out or not.

Sound? what sound?... Again glad you asked. as the clay is rubbed across the surface you can hear a "tick" or a "hiss"( almost like listening to a dirty record.) ok dated my self on that reference, but none the same. the Porter Cable running can cover up the important sounds you need to hear, and we all know what over claying a surface can do.

over claying? yes. Over claying. using the old adage least aggressive method first. over claying you can instill even more micro scratches and swirls.

If we weren't talking about serious overspray and we were talking about working on a delicate finish I would agree with you. However if you have ever done a car that has serious paint overspray on it then overclaying the surface would be the least of your concern.

If I have a serious scratch or scuff that can be buffed out, I reach for the rotary buffer so I can do it fast and effectively, understanding that I will have to fix the swirls afterwards. Same principle with overspray, if you have serious overspray you are going to want something that is fast and effective. I haven't tried this clay pad yet but if there is a possibilty of it saving my shoulder from a lot of rubbing than you can be sure it will be in my arsenol.

I used to detail for a dealership who used to drop dollars bending over to pick-up nickels. In other words, they would pay me to buff off overspray their boneheaded bumper painters would put on their cars. These painters would line the cars up and spray them right next to each other without even covering the car they were spraying. They used a lot of accelerator to get the paint to dry as fast as possible which made it impossible to clay and not too fun to buff either. They would use these idiots because they were cheap. Most of the time the bumpers didn't even match the car, but as long as the dealership could save $20.00 per car on bumper painting they kept using them.:hmmm: This dealership went under BTW, go figure.:ass I know this paragraph doesn't have much to do with what I was saying but I figured I would share it anyway.

Yes, I have one and I don't like it at all. The first time I used it, there was no problem I can recall, but I have tried to use it 2 times since. On both occasions, the clay would worm its way out and fall on the ground. If you want it, private message me and I will send it to you by mail.
