Bad Day Ruined my Griot DA

I was taking the backing plate off my 6 inch Griot in preparation for putting a 2 7/8 backing plate on that I had just ordered. I could find no where to put a wrench which I thought was very odd. I noticed four small screws in the backing plate and decided that these had to come out. Three came out with some force and the fourth one stripped. The metal on these screws was very low strength. I decided to drill it out and to make a long story short damaged the backing pad. I thought no big deal I will just buy a new backing plate. It was then that I realized that a new plate will not fit. This was not meant to come off. Apparently I have a old model that does not have a replaceable backing plate. The screw holes are undamaged but there is no way to buy the actual backing disc that has four mounting screws. Bad day in Utah!:wall

That sucks man, I'm sure you can get a part from Griot if you asked

I would try that first. If not, go for the newer model. Both of mine (3 and 6) have removable backing plates. I wasnt even aware that the older model didnt. Either way, the newer model is one hell of a work horse and has a life time guarantee. If you cant fix the one you have now, upgrade :D

Thanks. I will email Griot but this experience has pushed me towards the Porter Cable unit. I know a lot of people use the Griots and the newer unit is superior to mine but I have seen quite a few reviews confirming what I have always found that the Griot 6 has a hard time making any tough corrections. I ordered some Menzerna polishes a few days ago hoping to improve the setup. The new PC will certainly be an improvement over this particular Griot.

Maybe I'm just mad at Griots for this. I would like to hear the pro and cons of PC vs Griot before I decide. I just did some searching and see a lot of positives about the new Griot unit.

I'd call 'em, very nice Customer Service folks. I've removed 2000 grit sanding marks with the GG 6" using the Meg's MF system and D300. I haven't found it deficient in any way and it frequently keeps me from reaching for a rotary.

One of the highest recommendations for Griot's products is the Lifetime warranty. From everything I've read they're very easy to deal with on replacing products. I'm unfamiliar with their original DA and it's BP. If your situation is indeed self-inflicted I wouldn't expect a replacement but they might surprise you with a rock-bottom price on an upgrade to the current DA. Can't hurt to ask. Never hurts to butter 'em up with praise for their products before you tell 'em how you shot yourself in the foot and ask for a deal. :D

Regardless, you might look at this as an upgrade opportunity and end up being pleased enough with a new machine to make your current anguish ultimately worthwhile.

Self inflicted is right!:( After a little more research I am leaning towards a new model Griot. I was under the impression that the PC had more power but I now see I was wrong at least in the case of the newer model Griot.

They both are right up there neck and neck. There are some advantages the PC has that the Griots doesn't. But the lifetime warranty, cheaper price and more power puts it up there!

Sorry for your troubles Crossfire !

This kind of thing usually happens to me when ever I try to "fix" something!

Are you sure the backing plates damaged that badly ? Maybe its still usable?

Yeah, I put a bend in it! Wobbles! I just ordered the new Griot 6 inch. It definitely is an upgrade over what I had. I didn't really want to spend money on this right now but stuff happens. I was going to run into problems anyway because I wanted to mount a 2 7/8 backing plate to run 4 inch pads. I had already ordered the pads and plate and as I learned today they would not work with my Griot. I'm excited to have some new LC 6 inch pads, Mezerna polish and the new Griot coming!

You'll love it. I love mine, and its very powerful. To me, it makes a PC feel like a wax spreader. Your not going to get much more power without spending 3 times as much, or going with a rotary. You made a good choice.

Thx I can't wait till I get it. :yay Its supposed to ship on 9/30 so I have to wait about a month. I was in the process of upgrading my polishes and pads anyway.

Yeah, I know but I have had to wait from some things from Griots in the past. I waited 8 weeks once for a cabinet. I don't have any emergency need for this. My BMW will be sitting comfy in my garage awaiting a nice shine job!

Autopia-CarCare.com has Griot's Polishers in stock and ready to ship to you including the long cord model!

On a side note I'm sorry to hear about the issues with the old polisher, but the new one has a fully changeable backing plate and is powerful. It seems like you have the perfect attitude and my experience has always been that things like this are little blessings in disguise. Have fun with your new polisher, now lets get it in your hands ASAP!

Crossfire................cancel that order and let Autopiacarcare take care of you!!!:)
