backing plates

I just received a 5" backing plate and it is damn small. I was going to use it with my new 6" pads but I dont think it will work too well. I measured it and it is less than 5" in diameter. I thought a 5" backing plate should be just that,5" in diameter. So, Im guessing that it actually means that it is meant to be used with a 5" pad and a 6" backing plate is meant to used with a 6" pad? My 6" backing plate fits perfect on the 6" pad with a little space before the edge ,so Im going to use that.

I think the reason the backing plate is that much smaller than the pad is to keep it from coming in contact with your vehicle.
I use a 5" Velcro backing plate with 6.5" Meguiar's pads regularly with no problems.
FWIW, I have never actually measured the pads or the backing plate, but since I have about 1/2" of clearance all the way around, they must be pretty close to the mfg. stated size.

If your backing plate is larger than the Velcro on the back of the pad, won't the backing plate cut into the pad and damage it?

The velcro on my new 6" pads is exactly the same size as my 6" backing plate. Makes it really easy to center.

you can use up to a 6.5" pad with a 5" backing plate, but beyond 6.5 you need a 6' bp or else the machine will come unbalanced and shut off randomly.
