Backing plate vibration

Has anyone experienced vibration when using a 5inch backing plate on a PC with a 6" Counterweight? My machine vibrates quite a bit, even when the pad is perfectly centered on the pads.

FYI: i'm using meguiar's backing plate and pads.

I use a 5 inch plate and a 6 inch counter weight with 6 inch pads. I have found this to be the best combo for reducing vibration. I always use my PC at high speeds and this is were I notice the most difference. Removing the handle and holding the machine by the head with one hand and holding the other end of the machine with your other hand really reduces the vibration to.

That thread by Jimmybuffit doesn't really go into too much detail. What speed was he running the PC at? Did he use the handle or not? What backing plate did he use a Megs or Flex or what?

I guess only Jim can answer those questions, but I would assume (yeah, I know that's risky ;) ) he tested them at all speeds if he was posting a test. When *I* use a Meg's 5" backing plate with a 6"/6.5" pad *my* PC runs very smooth at speed 6. It may also be (like stevet said) because I never use the handle, hold the machine by the head with one hand and hold the other end of the machine with my other hand that I just don't notice any vibration.

There seems to be enough differing opinions that I'd say the bottom line is to find what works best for you. I suspect the backing plate weight (along with the size), pad and perhaps even the individual characteristics of a PC may effect the results. Counterweights are cheap and easy to change if anyone wants to try a different combo; hereâ€â„¢s a link for one source:

My PC runs well @ 4.5 and up, its anything lower and it seems to vibrate. Not too severly, but enough to numb my hand. I figure its the pads/backing plate being brand new. I'm using a 7336 with a 6 inch counterweight with a 5 inch backing plate with 6.5 inch pads.

Quick Question: can i use my 5 inch plate with 8 inch pads? Or should i get the larger backing plate?

I'd get the larger plate myself.

I dunno about using the bigger pads though, I find the PC works best with *smaller* pads. For paint correction a 4" pad works best, glazes/LSPs seem to work fine with a 6.5, but I don't like either the feel or the results with larger pads on the PC.
