Backing Plate/Pad Size for Newbie

I`ll soon be ordering a DA (most likely going with GG6) and am wondering about the backing plate/pad combo I should be looking at.

I`ll just be using this on our two cars (brand new Ford Edge and 2013 RAV4). The Edge doesn`t need much, if any, paint correction, while the RAV4 might need a bit.

It seems to me that, since both of these are smaller cars, that the "standard" GG6 combos I most frequently see have the 6" backing plate and 6-1/2" pads. I`m thinking a 5" backing plate w/5-1/2" pads might be a better way to go...might be a couple of spots the larger pads might not fit.

Or is there no big advantage to the smaller plate/pad?

(Asking because most combos sold here have the 6" plate/6-1/2" pads except for one I`ve got my eye on that includes some Blackfire product).

Better to start (forgot to mention I`ve never used a DA before) with 6" plate or would you recommend slightly smaller?

Also agree. Wise choice to go with GG6. Most versatile type of machine. I would also recommend a 4" (3 7/8 actually I think) backplate and some 4" pads for smaller areas. (Alternatively, you can just as easily go with a 3" backplate and 3" pads, there is a good variety of 3" pads out there nowadays). With 5" plate and 5.5 pads, and a smaller 3" or 4" setup you will be able to tackle anything.

Yeah, good point about the smaller stuff. Easy for us to spend his money, huh? ;)

Thanks guys....gonna start with the 5" plate/5-1/2" pad system I see here. I`m guessing the smaller pad (3 or 4") would be useful, especially on the A pillar and the small strips above the doors...maybe the tailgates, too. But I think I`ll add on later if I need to.

I agree with the 5 inch backing plate too. Pick up some microfiber pads and some Meguires d300 for those tough scratches.
