Background Knowledge

Hello fellow Autopians. :) Spring is around the corner and detailing year 2002 is approaching fast for many detailers. Plan on choosing whether to use Pinnacle Sov. or Blitz as the topper to my Klasse I have on the Maxima. The colour is black. The best colour when the car is clean. :D Car is a daily driver. Blitz is economical and durable. On the other hand, Pinnacle is expensive but gives the deep, wet look. Which attracts more dust? Blitz or Pinnacle? Do I have to wax every month with Pinnacle? Plan on purchasing a PC 7424. Anybody know any place other then Canadian Tire that sells the 7424 at a decent price? Buying from U.S. is not economical as brokerage fees, taxes would add up to the same price as purchasing in Canada. Group buy for Canadians on the 7424 would be a good idea. Thanks in advance. :)

They are putting together a group buy over at iclub.com. look in the group buy section. price will be$99

Pinnacle ...Pinnacle ..Pinnacle ....if I have to go deliver newspapers..Pinnacle ....now....if I do certain other cars, I may opt for Blitz..my second favorite......

Never tried the Pinnacle, but going on my 4th straight year of using Blitz and I would never change (unless OG ruins the product). I want something that is both durable, and economical. Alas, Blitz is a dust magnet, don't know about Sov. Depending on conditions, I have had Blitz last at least 3 months to a year+. :xyxthumbs

Souveran will definitely give you a bit more shine than Blitz. I love Blitz, but if money was a non issue, I'd just select Souveran and slap on a coat evey 4 weeks. Laters

There are some pretty good reviews and comparisons of the two products down in the Product Review Archive. I'd go with Souveran myself just based on what I've read about the reviews. I use Paste Glaz right now just because my car is white and I didn't want to spend the extra on Souveran just yet. I've got nuthin but love for Pinnacle. :xyxthumbs

Souveran is the easiest wax you'll ever use in your life, hands down...stuff is like butter. However it doesnt last more than a month. If you dont mind spending the extra $$ and applying it about once a month than go 4 it. It has slightly more "pop" than Blitz.

However if your on a tight budget and you need durablity Blitz is the way to go. Honestly, in terms of looks i dont thank Souveran is that much better than Blitz. At least I dont think any every day Joe could tell the difference that easily....just my .02 cents.

Leaning more towards Souv. I hope one tub of Pinnacle can last the detailing year 2002 from April to October of this year. Waxing once a month is ok for me. Every second wash I wax is ok. First thing, layer 5-6 layers of Klasse first before Pinnacle gets on the MAX. :)

I've been a fan of car care for some time now but only recently have I really gotten deep into detailing (worst mistake ever or greatest hobby discovery? My wife and I, and my wallet for that matter, would probably disagree). Right now I work pretty much only on the family cars but when I do something, I want to do it right. That's probably what led me to this forum in the first place. The amount of knowledge here is impressive to say the least. I'm curious how most of you have obtained the wealth of knowledge you have. Not to detract from the awesomeness that is TID, but are there some great books out there? Is it mostly trial and error and learning from your mistakes? I'm just a little curious. Thanks!:D

Welcome to Truth in Detailing !

Sounds like you are getting more than a casual interest in this, and that is great!!!

You are right - there is an incredible amount of awesome information just here alone, from the greatest bunch of guys/gals that you could ever ask for.

I dont know about the rest, but I came to love this because of my Dad who taught me at a very early age about it, and let me run with it. I was lucky enough to also learn how to work in his auto body shop and paint on my own for awhile, but I always liked Detailing more than anything else, primarily, because I like to keep things neat and clean, and I really like the challenge of taking something that is in need of professional help and straightening it all out, so that it exceeds expectations of the Client.

I personally have never read a book on the subject, and I believe there are some out there, but I have never taken the time to read one. I will look around and if I find one that is really good and accurate, I will send you a link to it, ok ?

I think, that even after one does read and study, you still need to develop your own "style" of how to accomplish the tasks involved, and there is no better way than the hands-on approach.

Many Detailers around here started out experimenting on their own vehicle/s, family vehicles, friends, etc., and those that wanted to go farther did.

It is certainly not for everyone, but those that do it, day in and day out, are really good and keep on improving, and developing better methods, and researching all the time, to find newer and better products, machines, methods, to make this particular Craft the best it can be.

We are also so very lucky to have the incredibly talented, people behind this particular Website, who are also car/detailing/etc., people, that have been totally committed to making this particular Site one of the best you will ever find. The amount of sacrifice they all make so that we can post here and share all our experiences in the Detailing world, is huge ! We are all so grateful for them and their world-class efforts.

So, enjoy your time, know that you are in great, great, hands of the people at Proper Auto Care, who will never steer you wrong, and will try really hard to help you understand and work through whatever issue you may have.

And that also goes for all the awesome individuals, whose names you have read and will yet read, who will work days, take pictures of their work, edit them and post them, and somehow still have time to stop and help someone who needs a question answered or advice.. :)

Enjoy your stay, look around, ask questions, give us feedback, it's all good here !

Great post, Dan and I agree 100%.

Unfortunately I've never come acroos any books either Hawkeye and it may be a void in the printed world. I think with the emphasis on our electronic society I've garnered just about everything I know about this "hobby" online. I've read plenty online and then tried out what I read. I liked some and didn't like other things and after about 10 years have settled into what works wonderfully for me.

Part of the problem with a book on the subject is the extremely progressive natuire of detailing. Things change all the time. With that said, I still think a book on accepted paint correction techniques and interior detailing wouldn't be a bad idea.

EDIT: I just searched Amazon books and actually there's a few on vehicle detailing! One of them is even a Haynes manual.

Welcome to TID Hawkeye_TDI

Dan said it best. He is right on mark with his post. This site that you have stumbled upon, is a wealth of information. Just about everything that I have learned, came from reading all the great posts by our forum members. Look up any write-ups by TH001, Street Dreams, Auto Concierge, Muttgrunt, Tru Shine, and many many others. That is how I learned it.

It's nice to have you here.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'll admit I was pretty naive coming into this. I thought everything was pretty straight forward, just like Mr. Miyagi says, "Wax on, wax off!" Then you start actually researching and realize there's so much more to it. Not to mention the amount of new products and technology that emerge on a nearly daily basis. It can be a little overwhelming to say the least, but the staff at PAC and this forum are beyond helpful.
