Autozone Wash Mitts are like sandpaper

Hi,

Went to Autozone today, picked up a wash mitt. Took it home and rubbed it on a brand new cd. The scratches were horrible. It was like rubbing it with sand. Needless to say I will return it. What did I expect for $2.99

Anyone else get the same results?:mad:

I know the photo isnt the best, but you can clearly see the horrific mauling of the surface. I could use 1200 grit sandpaper and get the same results.
 
Everything I have ever rubbed on a CD scratches it. If you stopped using everything that scratched a CD you would probably have nothing left to use on your car. Just because it scratched a CD does not mean it will scratch your car. The surface of the CD is not clear coated paint. Did you test the mitt after it was soaked in soapy water? This how you would use it on your car.
 
I rubbed a CD pretty hard with a WalMart MF and an ExcelDetail MF and they didn't scratch it at all. :nixweiss

That's some terrible scratching on that CD though. :eek:
 
I agree with stevet. You will never rub a dry mitt across your car, so doing it on a dry CD and getting scratches doesn't mean anything. It is known that foam polishing pads are less aggressive than wool polishing pads , but that doesn't translate into meaning that it's better to wash your car using foam.



If you decide to wash a CD, you have to also keep in mind to use as much pressure on the CD as you would your car.

Just like your car different light and different angles show different defects better. Take a flash light and hold it off to the side of your CD and shine the light across the surface. When I do this there is nothing that does not leave marring. I have over two hundred MF products plus foam apps, sheep skin mitts, cotton mitts, terry cloth towels, etc. All of them scratch a CD.

You might be right, it might not scratch when wet. But just to be sure can I try it on your car:o

I will do a wet soapy mitt test this evening and post the results late tonight.
 
I have a wash mitt and MF towels that have passed the CD scratch test. Completely dry and a lot of pressure, no scratches.



Wal Mart MF towels ($5 for 5) scratched when I rubbed the edges of the towels. Also most tags on high end MF towels scratch.



Some blank CDRs are known to scratch a lot easier than others.

I use CDs I get from work.
