Autopia Guide to Detailing Bias?

I'm relatively new to detailing and I'm looking to expand my arsenal, which currently consists of a PC 7424, Optimum's line of products, a wash mitt, a few microfiber towels, and a bottle of 3m car wash. Like a good noob, I'm doing a lot of reading and trying to weigh my options as far as products go. I'm very happy with Optimum's line, although I don't know any better, so I think I'm content with the paint stuff for now. I'm making a list of things to get, which includes tire and wheel cleaner and dressing, leather cleaner and conditioner, carpet cleaner, dash cleaner and protector, and various other little tidbits. As I was reading through the guide I noticed the guy recommended one Sonus product or the other for every application. With what I've read on the forum about the different choices for different applications it instantly threw up a question mark, so I'm just curious as to what's going on. Should I follow his recommendations and use all the Sonus products he recommends, or should I do more reading on the forum and compare other products?

BTW, if the guy who wrote the guide reads this, I mean no offense. I really appreciate you taking the time to write that :)

Sonus is the "house brand" of Autopia's sales site. They make an excellent product, but there are many good choices out there. I'd advise you to look at some click and brags and see what people used for products - if you like the way a certain car came out, try to duplicate it.

Well, the "guy who wrote" that, David Bynon, is the Mayor of Autopia, as well as the developer of the Sonus products, so it should come as no surprise that they are recommended in the detailing guide. I don't think you can go wrong using what he recommends, but of course it's your prerogative to choose something else.

PS You can delete any thread you have started. Just go to your first post, and click "edit".

Hehehe...

Joey, yes, he pretty much owns this site, and hes the one who wrote those invaluable articles. Sonus is his (one) brand name....

You'll find some level of bias at any detailing site. Autopia is refreshing because the owner is very tolerant of discussion about products other than his own and is willing to allow criticisms of his products. I've found more openness here than the other forums I've visited. Of course he used his own products as examples, that should come as no surprise. They're perfectly good, but DavidB would be one of the first to agree that there's no such thing as the "best" wax, etc. Needs and tastes vary.

I've used Sonus product and I really can't complain. They are good product. It's really up to you what product to use as long you are happy with their results.

I agree with most said here. Its all about personal preference. Test drive something you've heard about and develop your own opinion. If you owned and operated a site like this, which gives you the means to promote any product you like, you'd be crazy not to promote your OWN product. I love this site because you can learn through other peoples experiences with different products and they allow it. Some sites are very self-promoting and restrict a lot of other product promotion. Kudos to Autopia!

Ah, that makes much more sense now :)

I'll do a bit more research before I place my order. I'm really hoping I find that his products are the ones to suit my tastes; anyone who creates a resource for us like this deserves support.

Not anymore! Now he's got RDF, Ultima, and I think there was another... I also think RDF became Ultima? I can't remember.

Anyway, though, I think David said he's going to get an updated, rewritten version of the guide to detailing out sometime in the near future.

Regardless, its still an excellent, excellent, excellent guide for anyone starting.

Joey, to show you how unbiased this site is I can honestly tell you that I did not know DavidB owns Sonus until this thread. And I have been hanging around here for a while. I did know this is his site though. You will notice that all products are discussed here and all fair opinions are welcome.

Excellent excellent advice.

Yup... plus, while David could've made it to where this board was nothing more than an orgy of advertising for in-house products only, basically eliminating most smart members (like... certain other boards I shall not mention *AHEM*), he allows us to really discuss and further the art of detailing.

And to tell you the truth, this makes me want to buy something from here or the sponsors simply because I appreciate that. Had he advertised to us... I actually probably wouldn't have bought anything from here.

Thanks David!

I do have a question about the detailing guide. I downloaded the .exe version and I noticed when I am connected to Internet it does not work properly. It takes some time to display the desired chapter. If I am not connected to Internet or I block access thru firewall, it works fine. It seems like it must be phoning home.
